Sometimes the academic people suck at common sense and the common sense folks suck at the theoretical. It's what fits the person. A degree was just a gate for me to become an Armor Officer. The rest was up to me because college only gave me a baseline to work with. TLPs and OPORDs became the all mighty in my career. We should have a thread on it. In fact a large percentage of the degrees awarded today are totally worthless. Some examples are degrees in ethnic studies, psychology, sociology, history, fine arts and even education. All that you will get out of any of them is a low paying job that probably will leave you with massive student loan debt. The most popular majors in TN are psychology which is useless without a doctorate and criminal justice which is not required for any law enforcement job that I know of and general studies which just gets you a piece of paper. Science, engineering, technical and professional degrees such as law, medical or accounting are a different story but few are willing to put out the effort required for those. Most would be far better off learning a skilled trade. Reason being is that you will learn the ins and outs and theory of how things work within your field, but it is also mandatory that you take electives that broaden your overall knowledge. Some may argue that electives are unnecessary as things can be learned throughout life. While that is true, everyone experiences things differently. Someone who grows up in NYC might have a different outlook than someone who grew up in Texas. Formal (Universities) if done right teaches us to be objective. The best training depends on several factors. What is best for one may be a total disaster for another.

One should evaluate one's ability, desires, and circumstances, then pick the path most wanted and most like to bring success. Next you should be slotted into a field or specialty for which you have shown an aptitude for and hopefully get to professionally develop your skills through training and certifications. The more experience you get and the more you excel at the work, the more valuable you are. Best wishes however you end up..
