The White House said Wednesday that it was readying the next round of economic penalties against Russia, even as it prepared for a meeting Thursday in Geneva of senior-level diplomats from Ukraine, Russia, the U.S. and Europe.

“We are actively preparing new sanctions,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said. “We are also looking at tomorrow’s meeting for an indication that Russia will or intends to pursue a path of de-escalation rather than escalation.”

Yes, BUT we will not be going to war (in the conventional aspect, anyway) with Russia.

During the period of time prior to Desert Shield/Desert Storm, the Army called back folks with specific MOSs who were in the IRR. I remember some of this folks were in the barracks next to mine when I was in OSUT. Those MOSs who were recalled were done so for specific reasons at that time. I do not remember what they were, but I can assume that it had to with end strength, etc.

I do not see the same kind of build up of troops this time for the crisis in the Ukraine with Russia. The White House and the International Community are continuing to increase the sanctions levered against Russia. I personally believe that the second and third order effects of "boots on the ground" actions against Russia would be devastating on a global level.

First, don't think we'll go to war with Russia....1) don't think the American public would stomach another conflict....even if regional.....especially after 13 years of war we are just now winding down from and 2) Russia, I don't believe, is that stupid as antagonize either us or NATO to the point where we sould commit to hostilities. Personally, I believe Mr. Snowden has provided Russian Leaders and their intelligence services with enough information to secure his political asylum/freedom and based on the Russian analysis of this information, they know just how much to push and how we will react. If we were to be pulled into a conflict, it would be as a member of NATO and although we more than not provide the lions share of support to NATO, our involvment would not consume the level of troop support that would necessitate a recall....again, because I don't think the American public would support it and if supported by Congress/Senate it would be political suicide....besides, believe we would lay on a Naval and Air Blockade that would strangle Russia economically.....and Putin can't afford destroying what economy they have. Putins smart and calculating....don't believe he's stupid.

I personally can see us going to war with Russia in any conventional form. If we do go to "war," it will probably be more along the lines of economic warfare than anything else. We have been enacting heavy sanctions lately and it will probably only get worse. However I think that it will be tough for us to put any type of economic squeeze on them since they still have China in their corner.
