I wish I could accept my Medical Retirement from the Navy better.
It has been over 20 some years, but I am still ANGRY and disappointed in myself that I could not "RETIRE NATURALLY" from the Navy.
I was in line for a brilliant career, then it was all ripped away from me!
Even my shrink is attempting to help me "let go" of my anger and disappointment. ........

Oh well, some things are left to a HIGHER POWER!

I would have enlisted as a medic, which was my initial plan anyhow. I also would have commissioned at least a decade ago. I'd be a Major on my way to LTC, instead of a butter bar.

If the military had paid enough to eat on back in those days I would have gone to OCS when it was offered the second time and stayed in awhile. With the pay scale that was in effect at the time that was not an real good choice. At the time I also felt that they had jacked me around (they really did) and I didn't trust the army. Otherwise I enjoyed my time in the army and glad that I served.

Gone to jump school for my precious first reenlistment option instead of DI school. Don't know how easy it was to volunteer for the drill field compared to getting a permissive slot for jump school.
(Small thing, but the only thing that has repeatedly come to mind over the years.)

I am a Marine and before I retired from Law Enforcement my partner was an Army Ranger and we used to have this conversation all the time. It basically revolved around 3 scenarios.

1) do better in high school, get appointed to a service academy, get commissioned into an intel MOS and then jump to the CIA/DIA

2) The special ops tour, Go to the Army first (easiest access to selection) become Ranger, SF, Delta (if possible) in first contract. Then jump to Navy, go to BUDs and earn Trident, Next stop USMC Amphib Recon school, last stop USAF and PJ school. Granted you have a training record that would look like a phone book but it would be an exciting journey.

3) Go in USMC, get combat Medals, CAR, Bronze Star or above, then move over to the USAF in some fast promoting MOS and live like a demigod.

Two things come to mind.
I would have begged, borrowed, and stole to get out of the branch detail program and staying infantry. While I loved being in the Army, there we days--nay, years--I absolutely dreaded being an AG officer, which was about 362 on my wish list. Needs of the Army blah blah blah. While it was a privilege to serve, there is a lot to be said for job fulfillment and self esteem.

I would have sought out a mentor. I never heard of the term until my advanced course. Having one would have helped me navigate the waters of career management, helped me avoid shooting myself in the foot on more than a few occasions, and given me someone to confide in with personal issues.

My reality is that I would change nothing. My time in the Navy was what I needed at the time. It gave me structure and order at a time I needed it, but allowed for destructive behaviors that I still struggle with. Getting out was the best decision of my life at the time.

Too many things: Spent more time taking civilian education classes, shied away from the booze, kept my mouth shut, checked my ego more and looked at getting a European assignment (not that Korea and Hawaii were bad, but it just would have been nice to see that corner of the world), not have let my small brain over ride my big brain when it came to the issue of my now ex wife. Like I said, too many things. Maybe had I done some of these things, I would have made SGM instead of SFC.

I wish I would have kept the names, contact info and permanent addresses of friends then kept in contact with them. It would be nice to know them now and it would helped having a network to share decision making with both in and out of the military.

I would have planned for my success more completely. I'm a firm believer that the lack of mentorship, and personal motivation, is what caused me to take so long to promote between E-5 and E-6. As an E-6 I started planning and jumped in ranks fast after that.

I think I would have focused on promoting the developmental counseling a lot more, actually pushing leadership to use as it was it was meant to be used. Perhaps things have changed since I was a young soldier, but developmental counseling mostly was just used to tell you that you messed up, or a review of your duties when quarterly demands were made. It made the process next to useless.

I would have found a way to go on every staff ride, I would have visited battlefields and installations from Hadrian's Wall to Hue, taken the duty train to Berlin. It gripes me to think of the chances I had and blew off. But I was just a smartass kid trying to have fun. I didn't have the imagination to put myself in the place of those who served in perilous times.
I might have even stayed in if I'd thought about the opportunities. But I have to be honest and say that the Army was a mess when I got out in 1969, and it only got worse for a while. All honor to those who stuck it out and made it into the Army we have now!

I wish I'd have known about USMAPS when the guy from the Point came to talk to a bunch of us from FAHS about appointments. I didn't think I qualified; should have realized they wouldn't have spoken with me if there was no chance of my getting in... Wish I could go back...

Other than that in 1981 I was looking at either going to the 82nd or putting in a packet for SF; my wife told me if I went to "Group" to put in my divorce papers - so I went to the 82nd - regrets, but the marriage ended anyway so...

Overall, no regrets really - been a good ride all considering.

I would not have re-married to a soldier. She re-enlisted for Alaska while I still had a year left on my Germany tour. Stupid me put in for retirement so that we could stay together and gave up being promoted to E-8 and beyond. Only to find out after I retired that she was following her Squad Leader to Alaska because they were having an affair. Within a year I lost the Army I loved and the wife I thought loved me. Twenty years later that is still a defining period in my life.

That is a difficult questions that opens up much thought and discussion. I was caught up in the 1992 drawdown. Pretty much told my career was over with by the Army and the best thing I could do is resign my Regular Army Commission and If I did not I would be involuntary separated. Well, I did as they strongly suggested and managed to stay in the Army Reserves for another 15 years retire with 29 years of service and go back as a retiree twice for two years to the Middle East. And I still was promoted to O-5. Always wondered what would have happened if I did not resign my commission in 1992 and stayed? I think I made a good choice.

Actually, if I had been on my game, I'd have gone for the reserve band while finishing college. That alone would have given me confidence. However, when the time came to choose the MOS, I think maybe I should have at least auditioned. If I didn't make it, I could still have gone for the MOS groupings I was considering during the recruiting process. One thing I do honestly believe: My recruiter actually was trying to look at for me and my family. Both he and my counselor listened to my concerns about family issues and used that to guide me toward specialties that worked to that end. As a result I landed a peachy MOS that gave me family time. However, I would have thrived in the band and later learned that Band units give comp time to soldiers as well as a few other perks I would have loved. Still, it worked out. No time for any real regrets.

I never would have changed a thing. Enlisted at end of WW II, stayed in, fought in S. korea at Inchon & Seoul, wounded at Uijongbu, returned to North Korea at Chosin reservoir, acting platoon leader in a rifle company consisting of 1 lieutenant, 1 other sergeant and me and about 25 other troops but we kicked some Chinese ass! Fought in Viet Nam-a wasted war because we did not fight to win. Only change I would have liked was that I got a 502 for reckless driving which cost me my promotion to full Colonel. Otherwise i am proud of my service and of my Marine Corps. Semper Fidelis to all you other jarheads!

I would have signed up as a member of the Georgia National Guard and attended basic training between my junior and senior year of high school. That would have meant doing drill once a month during my senior year of high school - something that my 18 year old self wanted no part of. Looking back it would have given me another year for retirement pay. Since I ended up attending West Point, I wouldn't have gone to AIT the next summer anyway and my GA NG contract would have been over at that point. But what teenager listens anyway...

I would have sought out mental help assistance after the incident aboard USS IOWA, April 19, 1989. I spent over 20 years suffering from PTSD related to that incident because an officer told me to "suck it up and get over it."

I've thought about this a lot over the years.

First, I would have gone active duty from the start, rather than joining the Reserves and going active six months later. Would have ended up with a fat enlistment bonus.

Second, I'm glad it happened the way that it happened, as I've been happily married now for 17 years and have two amazing sons. But my plan was to put in my flight warrant packet. Had it completed and ready for submission. And then met this guy....... Never did turn it in. But I don't regret it.

Third, I got out when our first son was born because dual military families are *hard*. I didn't want someone else raising him, so I got out so I could while my husband went to Korea/deployed/etc. But I missed it. I went DA civilian so I could still work with Soldiers, but I'm not taken as seriously as I was when I wore the same uniform. Still, I'm supporting Soldiers and my husband is now retired. I'm content. I would never trade my family for being a helicopter pilot. Never.

I would have joined when i was 18 instead of waiting until after i was 21. I would have joined regular Active Duty instead of 3 years in the National Guard. I wouldnt have gotten married in the Army either.

Even though I was in during the freezes after Korean War, I would have liked to stay in the Intel Analyst business by working towards a Warrant that would have allowed me to remain an intel specialist for a full career. As it was, we were stuck at E-4 for an eternity with not much to look forward to in that area. While I do regret not being able to pursue the intriguing business of analysis it did serve me well as a journalist in later life - got nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times but never won it! My Army time, plus military school before that and its ROTC plus another year of it in college, did put some structure in my life for which I have always been grateful.

Well, a lot really the normal, not gotten married, pressed more for promotions and definitely not medically discharged would be my first thing loved army life, my favorite was watching all the guys/girls in the barracks getting drunk and stumbling over things placed strategically around the common rooms and hallways.

It might be meaningful for first year recruits to be able to read these posts. I think that having the voices of the future echoing somewhere in their ears might possibly be helpful to them as they start to walk the same roads. It seems that the "regrets" fall into similar situations that we recognize and correct as we mature - getting married too young; not understanding the value of enlistment opportunities; stressors of family vs military service; lack of financial planning/knowledge/choices; immaturity. Likewise the things people thought they did right are alike - taking the offers of schooling and training opportunities; using deployment to travel and learn; being wise about enlistment and financial opportunities for future financial security; making choices that took family obligations into consideration.

I want to say as a non military person who has known people who are both career and short time military vets, that there's no right answer for anyone. Military life isn't for everyone, and for sure not for every spouse or family. It was rough on my cousins, but my Aunt adapted. My niece wasn't thrilled about her husband's frequent deployments and his dad was dying, so he didn't re-enlist after 12 years in, for which now he's grateful. My girlfriend loved her career so much she became a contractor when she retired. My cousin only got out because she had two kids, but her husband retired and she loved the travel. We all have regrets, and things we're thankful for. The bottom line is you have to do what you think is right at the time, live your life out, readjust if you don't like what's happening, get help if you need it, and keep moving ahead.

I had orders for OCS and the physician assistant program. It was ripped away from me because I was transferred to another company across post and the chain of command there canceled the orders and told me they knew what was best for my career.

Not much. It was a great show. I think I would like to be able to do it all over again just for the experience of it though, maybe stay enlisted, do broadcasting or water craft. Something entirely different, not because of dissatisfaction, but because it was a challenge. Think about the days of BCT, weren't they fun? Maybe this go around, I would volunteer for everything single stupid thing the Smoke wanted bodies for, be the first for every detail, every example, be in the front of every line. Be the muddiest, sweatiest boot troop on the trail. I guess, I would find the fun in the things that had some fun in it. Too often and too soon, we had to grim up. Being dumb and 17 has it's upside...
Maybe enlist as a Spacecraft Door Gunner...

Fighting my Commanders decisions. Failed a PT test because the spotter stopped counting my push-ups and I was 5 short. This was weeks before PCSing out of Hawaii. The Commander said I'd have to stay for the next 3 months and do the FIP program before retesting. Only way to do it was being put in a control roster. Passed the test, still couldn't leave because the Commander thought he could take me off but couldn't. Air Force did a draw down and those are the roster were tagged first.

Well When you have a Commander that is being QMP out. And he takes it out on his command. That sucks. I missed a promotion by one point because of his taking away his commanders points. And as such he flushed my chance at going to OCS. That was when I decided to get out and become a police officer. The best part of that was years later he was out of the service and I arrested him for drugs and a DUI. So win win. Oh and I reminded him that he was still a Piece of SHIT.. :)

If I could go back I would take advantage of my opportunity to go for the support side of Delta. I don't think I could have survived the Q course, but if I did it would have been a nice feather in my cap and I would have had a more stable career and not moved as much as I did, 7 stations in 14 years, four in a three year span.

I would not have tried to train people. I would not have taken the worse shift to train, when I had first say, and I would have taken the more lax shift and made someone else train on the crappy shift.

I would not have shared my internet "kind of hard when they put 4 people to a room".

If I had done the following two changes, I very well might not have hated the Navy due to the problems that resulted from my previous choices. I don't know if I would have stayed in, chances are I would have still gotten out, but I don't believe I would have been 100% dead set on it like I was.

My military career consisted of serving in two branches, enlisted, NCO, and officer. I enjoyed some great assignments -- and survived some less than great ones. I was not a hero but I was honored to walk with a few. They inspired and motivated me to do more and go farther than I believed possible at the time.

I met and married my lovely wife of 50 years as a result of being in the service, our son survived a difficult birth thanks to military health professionals, and we had the opportunity to see the world like no tourist ever could.

I've considered this question carefully for some time now and come to the conclusion that I wouldn't change my career path because it has provided me with everything I hold dear in life. I would, however, appreciate the opportunity to go back and express my sincere appreciation and undying gratitude to the many men and women who played such an important role in my career.

Looking back, I think everything worked out better than I deserved. At most career crossroads I made the decision that I thought was best for my family. When I look at the alternative in every case, I still think I made the right choices. On a personal level I wish I had listened more and studied harder when I was a young officer. As a senior officer I should have had more humility.

In bootcamp in 1983, It was an option to "Opt out" of the government matching education funding. I stupidly opted out and had nothing for college. big mistake. HUGE. but at 17, I only had eyes for the immediate paycheck. Didn't want anything taken away from it.

Never trust the word of officers in my chain of command/influence. Total distrust, and constant verification through others would have saved me a lot of misery. Not the least of which, were two investigations that were the result of officers lying to cover their asses. The days of a "gentleman" officer's word being his bond are long gone.

I did okay going from E1 to CW3 over 29 years active, but if I had to do it all over again, I would have accepted the CO's offer towards the end of Basic Training to attend the USMA Preparatory School. Instead, my punk ass 19 year old self said, "Thank you sir, but I must decline the offer. I only plan on being in the service for 4 years, and then I want to go to a civilian college". That was probably only rivaled by the time in late 1986 when I had 8k bonus money in my bank, and a friend from back in the states said I should put the money into this company called Microsoft. He was wicked into computers, and promised me it was a great idea. Instead, since I was in Germany, I bought a used Mercedes, and tooled around in it until it broke down two years later.

I went from E-5 to E-3 because I wrote up the command (art 183) after finding out our CO was kicking people out on drug charges because of their race and I had evidence he was a member of the KKK. He was going to be a one star so they covered it up. I got out, but found out that he was arrested about a year latter for stealing around $40,000 from the command rec fund. He was asked to retire with full benefits.

I would've spent more time working on developing my people skills and mentoring my subordinates to help further their careers in so doing to further my career along in the military and in the following civilian career. I look back sometimes and wonder "what if . . . " But the fact of the matter is that I was a pretty immature corporal after four years. I had a few rough years after I left the Corps but I found the right girl plugged ahead (like the Corps taught me) , had a great career as a sports writer and I'm still married to that girl after 55 years. None of the great adventure would have happened if I'd stayed in. However, my proudest memories are of being a United States Marine.

I had a great career. Are there some things I wish I had done differently in my 23 years of service, "Yes". However, I have great memories of my experiences and I've learned from my mistakes. The military established me for success in my career after the military. It has and continues to help me provide for my family in many ways. I would change nothing. I am in a good place (DoD job) and I got here by what I have went through in the military...whether I liked it or not...and most of the time I hated it. But I look back and see that it was just a perception. I would change nothing at all. I got an ROTC scholarship awarded to me after I had been in a little over a year. I transferred to my unit and decided to decline my scholarship and stay on active duty. I was lazy. I just didn't want to do what it took. I would change that if I had a do over.

Took a lot more photos. Fired a couple of NCOs that needed to be fired instead trying to bring them along. Reverse 2 decisions for the sake of the family that cost me career wise and seemingly were not appreciated as time went on. Sought mentors and do what they recommended and be humble enough to take advise from those with experience.

On the whole, a fantastic career. I did things and saw places I never imagined I would do/see. Things to do different? Not have gotten married as young as I did and saved money which a young SM rarely does (at least back then - so proud to see young SM saving like fiends these days)

I really did not have a military career just a three year enlistment but things at home kept me from reenlisting as was my plan,I actually liked Army life,probably better for me in the long run as my chosen profession would have put me in situations where such things as life expectancy was not altogether a sure thing,still regret it though.

I would have listened to my friends and not married my ex-wife. Then after marrying her, I got out of the service because she didn't want me to take an assignment at reenlistment time. Hind sight is always 20/15 or better. I did finish with 21 years of service, but my break's in service hurt my advancement, but I did find a fine wife who supported my military service.

I would have pushed the Docs at the base I was at much harder to do an MRI on my injured spine quicker than it was done. The initial injury occurred January 2005, and because I wasn't showing "enough" pain, they figured an MRI was a waste of money. Fast forward to June 2008, I finally get an MRI done to show my L5-S1 disk is completely gone on my right side, and bulged 200% on my left side. When the Doc asked if previous MRIs had shown the same thing, his jaw hit the floor when I told him that was my first...

Needless to say, had I pushed harder for an MRI to be done earlier, I might still be Active Duty to this day instead of a disabled military retiree

I would have signed up to be a UAV operator (I don't know the MOS code for that) Instead of ammo. I could have had a good job working for Raytheon. On the flip side I met some of the coolest people and I still hang out with one of my buddy's from my unit, so the grass is always greener i suppose.

Nothing.....I did 3 years as an AD Army 11B, 10th MTN. One deployment to Iraq, a lot of it sucked and I dealt with some really shit people but also some great ones. It was an adventure, I got a chance to do my part for the Red White and Blue, but when the time came to ETS with an Honorable Discharge I ran with it. I could see in 2010, that the Army was starting to enter a fucked up period ,many of the E-5's and E-6's with numerous deployments that I respected were getting out, they told me "dude just ETS shits getting fucked"

I would have embraced military life earlier in my career. Because I joined to avoid getting drafted, I spent too much of my first enlistment wishing I were back at home. When I finally grew up a little and started being where I was instead of dreaming of being somewhere else, I kind of liked it. By then, several years had passed and I'm sure it affected my promotions.

I got out after 11 yrs, 3mo, 17 days, because I didn't want to spend 2+ years away from my wife and newborn son. I had orders for Vincenza, Italy and my wife was a QASAS. The QASAS slot there was a GS12. She was a GS11, I was a SSG. The QASAS program would not even consider sending her there. DA wouldn't consider sending me any where else, so I declined to reenlist. I ended up with an reup code of RE3, which means if I wanted active duty in the future, it would be as a SP4. HR asked if I wanted to join the IRR, but as an E4. No, thank you. So I got out and ended up as a retired Dept Army GS13. I really wish I could have stayed on AD, but I guess it kind of worked out.

The Navy wanted to make me a sub nuke ET. I wanted nothing to do with it. I finally 'failed' ET school. Best move. I have been stationed in 3 countries, sailed on 5 ships on 8 oceans/seas, and visited about 30 countries and learned enough of several languages to get something to eat, shop, get directions and carry on at least a limited conversation. I met my wife at a restaurant in Virginia Beach (slept through lunch Labor Day weekend at Dam Neck). I went to Antarctica where I spent 13 months and learned some Russian from our exchange scientist and had a chance to use some of what I knew living in Portland, Oregon which has quite a Ukrainian/Russian community. My SK training helped me get a great job working with foreign navies for almost 20 years after I retired from the Navy, meeting some great folks and doing quite a bit of travelling. I wouldn't have the wonderful grandkids I have, and wouldn't be a member of the Patriot Guard Riders that my youngest son turned me on to, with the friends I've made. Also, because of my job I held after the Navy, I would be living only on my SS and Navy pension. I worked under a union where I built up enough seniority to receive a life time pension, along with my shipyard small pension. Moving recently to Oregon gave me a nice break since they don't tax SS or military pension, and my 2 civilian pensions aren't quite enough to be taxable in Oregon. Nothing about my life is a coincidence, as far as I'm concerned.
No, I wouldn't change a thing about my career in the Navy.

I would have chosen to remain silent. My biggest regrets were not my own decisions, but the ones forced on me. The choices I couldn't avoid, which put me in the positions I hated the most. Taking a man out of combat arms, as a Tank Master Gunner, and forcing me into recruiting, to serve under some very obvious stolen valor motherfuckers, and then have your career trashed because they were offended that they were caught? In the end I came out on top, but I never should have had that battle.

Things couldn't have worked out better . . . and with no planning at all. I served my four years as a grunt, came home to a crap job situation, met my dream girl who inspired me to be way better than I thought I could ever be. Had a great, 40-year career as a sports writer and retired. We're still together 55 years later. I've thought about different scenarios and their outcomes and my only conclusion is I wouldn't have met her and that was the key moment of my life.

I had a line number for E-5 but the President put the military in check and said the Military had a duty to repay the cost of the war. Okay, I was pissed. My orders to Korea were red-lined, sewing on E-5 red-lined, killed all pay raises, offered me to reenlist and go to Minot if I wanted to stay in! I decided against the reup and ended my career at 4-years, 3-months, and 21-days. I would have rather stayed but I felt they wanted us out (1977).

Honestly, that's a really interesting question...I'd seen you'd listed 100% total perm svc-connected disabled (SCD), I am also, just figured I'd mention for perspective (really long story, obv)...anyway, I'd made one biggie bollix-up when I'd gone in, I'd gone line accidentally, instead of on the clinical side, as I'd wanted (also another really long story), which, needless to say, caused me untold beaucoup heartache, misery, grief, and aggravation later on, of course...my wife and I are obv also stable now, thank God, however, I'd just figured to relate at least that much, if only as your thread got my mental gears rather whirling, as it were, if nothing else, you know? Really well-phrased question, actually, for real, as I'd said....

I would have wanted to be a Warrant Officer. I failed by few points going to OCS school & they wanted me to take my Morse Code over so I could go. But wasn't interested until I met one in Germany. Wow. To start over that would be my choice.

I would never have left the Air Force for the Army. I may not have been able to commission as quick as I did (non tech degree), but at least they would still be paying me and I would still be able to retire from the service. No one should have to go through what my family has had to endure for the last 15 or so years. No one. This includes the US Army refusing to acknowledge my commission, my mother pulling her hair out trying to understand the situation (she pinned me at Benning), my uncles (who were all in the military) getting frustrated and angry due to the US Army's attempt to reneg on their contract, my wife and children's disbelief, and the ABCMR refusal to even address the situation when it was posed to that entity.
