In most states you cannot shoot someone for just breaking into your home. Further, there are some methods to deter a home break-in or invasion. A few below that I practice, your MP's or PD might have a longer list.

1. Block sight lines with potted plants or other items so people cannot look in a window or down a hallway and see across the entire inside of the home.

2. Buy at least one battery powered Illuminera Candle and place it within view of a window so someone outside can see the flickering light or flame. Most folks will assume someone is home seeing a lit candle.

3. Always leave some lights on in the home on timer switches so the lights go on and off at specific times at night. Don't have your home go completely dark at night on the inside. If you leave a room lit make sure nobody from the outside has a direct line of sight into the lit room.

4. Install some motion activated lights on the outside of your home that can determine a human from a group of blowing leaves.

5. Overall make it very difficult to determine if someone is in the house or not or if someone is still awake or not in the home from the outside. Vary your routines as well. Some theives watch to see if folks take the garbage to the curb on collection days on weeks I have the space, I sometimes skip collection day buy I still stay home.

6. Keep your garage door closed as much as possible and if there are windows to the garage buy heavy curtains to cover them so people can't look in to see if a car is in the garage.

7. Don't always religiously answer the door bell right away when your home or a knock at the front door. If it is someone legit they will come back or call.

One more item, I know blinds and planter shutters are both cheap and fashionable but you can see through the cracks from the outside of the home. Buy some curtains. On the bedrooms I have sheer curtains and then another set behind those to block the light. During the day I leave the sheers closed. I can see out the window and nobody can see in. The sunlight still comes in via the sheer curtains. At night close the heavy curtains over the sheers. They cannot tell if your home or in the bedroom or not with that system because from the outside it looks like the curtains are closed all the time. In the event something happens don't make any statements without speaking to a lawyer. In 17 years as a CID agent I never knew of a soldier to use a firearm to defend their family. I met a bunch of dumb SOBs that needed shot for attacking folks. There is nothing in the UCMJ that says you have to allow your family to be attacked. CW3 Michael Clifford Sun, 30 Jan 2022 23:07:58 -0500 2022-01-30T23:07:58-05:00 2021-11-07T20:53:15-05:00
