If I got out of AD Army in November of 2015, but would like to re-enlist under Army Reserve, would I need to go through basic again? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/if-i-got-out-of-ad-army-in-november-of-2015-but-would-like-to-re-enlist-under-army-reserve-would-i-need-to-go-through-basic-again

I got out on account of depression and family issues that I feel have been resolved now. If you could not survive basic it may be an indicator as to whether the Military is for you. I would highly recommend you focus your energies on a profession better suited for your person. There self assessments available that will give you an idea of what your path might be.

Every school subsequent to basic is as demanding or more so. Standard training, even for APFT is far and away advanced beyond when you previously served and will likely print physical and mental stamina challenges equal to or harder than the basic you experienced. I'm 50 and could still destroy basic if needed. A lot will depend on how you exited the Army - you will need to check you re-enlistment codes - one of the boxes 24-27 on your DD-214. RE-3 you will need a waiver - RE-4 move than likely a no go. As others have mentioned - are you willing to deploy? Reserves these days doesn't guarantee you will be state side. SPC David S. I returned to the same MOS in 2005 as a Reserve Soldier and did not have to attend basic training again. I would ask a recruiter for current rules and info. I imagine if you try for a different MOS, you will have to do some sort of initial training.

Part 2: If you don't think you can handle the time away to attend basic, what are you going to do during a deployment? I don't know what you may have heard about Reserves, but we are now an Operational Reserves, and no longer Strategic Reserves. A large portion of the component is combat support and will be relied on and used to supplement active duty deployments. 1SG Private RallyPoint Member Mon, 21 Jan 2019 22:16:09 -0500 2019-01-21T22:16:09-05:00 Response by SSG Private RallyPoint Member made Jan 22 at 2019 12:21 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/if-i-got-out-of-ad-army-in-november-of-2015-but-would-like-to-re-enlist-under-army-reserve-would-i-need-to-go-through-basic-again?n=4307222&urlhash=4307222

Skipping all the other stuff, you need to talk to a reserve recruiter or go to a reserve unit that has a Victor (retention counselor), they should be able to tell you if you need basic again ( I doubt it) and what MOS's are available in your area. You may need to reclass, but it is doubtful they would send you to active duty MOS for a reclass, the reserves have stand alone school houses on most active duty post that handle AIT. I reclassed back in 2013 to 92L and attended the reserve school, but our training was at Ft. Lee, in the same building etc as the regular Army, our POI was the same except we had a condensed schedule, which meant we usually started early and stayed later and usually had class over the weekends when the AIT students did not. Plus Reserve reclass is usually in multiple phases, I took phase 1 and phase 2 back to back but you don't have to.
