Languages are assigned by Group assignment and DLAB score, you don’t get to choose (unless you can test out on a target language). 1SG Alex Larson Wed, 28 Feb 2018 17:09:26 -0500 2018-02-28T17:09:26-05:00 Response by CPT Nicholas D. made Feb 28 at 2018 5:34 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/if-assigned-to-19th-group-in-texas-is-there-any-way-of-knowing-which-foreign-language-i-would-be-assigned-during-language-phase-of-the-q?n=3402183&urlhash=3402183 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Talk with the unit. Each unit will have a few languages that they are assigned. I was 19th in OH, and got to pick between French, Russian, or Arabic. I chose French since it was a shorter language (4 months versus 6), I had taken some French classes in HS, and I figured it had a higher retention factor (same alphabet and plenty of Latin influences in English). After multiple collegiate German courses, my français is still much better after only 4 months at SOFLTC (16 years ago). I recommend a language that you’ll be able to remember and stay proficient. Until recent language initiatives in recent years, I remember several Arabic or Russian speakers that couldn’t order a salad in a restaurant in their target language after 6 months out of the Q. French, Spanish, and German don’t carry the same Foreign Language Pro Pay (FLPP) but you probably won’t dread your next Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). Good Luck! CPT Nicholas D.
