The US Army Corps of Engineers was tasked during the Bush administration to start building a wall. It was in various forms, depending on the geography/topography. In some places is was virtual (supposed to be anyway). The progress was stopped shortly after Bush left office.

Physical Boundaries can be built but immigration is cause by two things. Push and Pull. Imigrants are pulled to the US by the lure of jobs that pay much better than they can get at home, opportunities and social programs. The a border wall along Texas is a risk many will take if they can get a job as a laborer in North Carolina once the get past it, with little or no chance of deportation. The real " wall" needs to be removing the pull of those jobs and social services by cracking down on those who hire illegals, assuring that only legal residents get social benefits and requiring that State and Local Law enforcement assist in enforcing immigration laws.
The "Push" is in the native countries where the economies are so bad and governments are so corrupt that people feel hopeless. There is little we can do as a country other than try to be a good nieghbor and trade fairly with them. I would say we could suggest that those countries be open to foriegn investors,, with the caveat that anything made there be bought and consumed there, or be subject to regular trade agreements.

A rotating army train exercise along the border, even though it is very long should do the trick.. Fankly I am quite sure that allowingly the border patrol to do its job properly is for the most part sufficient.. I would love to see them implant RF ID chips into at least the criminal illegal deportees. I am not thinking we are going,to,have any mass deportations. It's impractical and a bit cruel. If drug smugglers were sent to Guantanamo processed with extreme predujice and then released back to Mexico to the highest bidder or the prison officials that would be a great start. Precious few would be claimed Yet it would be a nothing too It situation to give the prisoners a trial by military tribunal. Could offer a bounty to the federalies on drug smugglers.
And if any are shot trying to escape? DADT.

I really don't think waisting millions of furthered tax dollars is necessary. Not to offend anyone here who's family came over in immigration after WWII. However, the rising increase I see is due to all of welfare, aid and free medical given to anyone coming over. I see a lot of it in some our local county news here in California. One case a man came over from Mexico said the famous magic words "Oboma said it was ok" and he pretty much got a free place to live paid by tax payers, free meals and in home care after getting open heart surgery. Which was also paid for by Oboma care. Only to return back to Mexico when released from doctors care.
The majority of people are opportunists, if they can take advantage they will. It's just up to us if we want to continue fronting the bill. So take away all the free hand outs and they will more then likely just leave.
It's the same concept as feeding wild animals, if you do it once they will come back and expect it. Many people have been attacked because they of feeding cute critters such as raccoons for example. Some do it for years and when they think the raccoon has decided to be apart of the family, the person goes to pet them and is in absolute awe and star struck because it attacked them! So no matter how intelligeant of a species we think we are, we still have primitive tendencies.
You can't keep feeding the majority of the world because you feel sorry for them, and then expect a big thank you for your efforts. Instead offering aid, offer help to fix there government so that they can be more reliable on there own natural resources.

Or here's an idea! Let's stop taxing the American people and start taxing the countries for every refugee and immigrant that comes into our country. It's not like we don't know where most of them come from. I know a lot of immigrants like Brazilians go to Italy to get citizen ship there and then get a 30 day visitors visa to come here and then end up staying! So there you go, we could tax two countries, revert the responsibility back to the countries themselves. Put it back on the main to take care of there's own so they don't have to pay us to do it.

The wall can be a physical wall where practical, a virtual wall where natural boundaries or terrain makes a wall unnecessary. We can use drones and other technology too.

The real change will be our posture toward the border. If people know it is next to impossible to get in, fewer will try. If they know that once caught they are going immediately back that will reduce the effort more. The last piece is our posture toward the countries allowing their citizens to illegally migrate. We should let them know they either stem the flow or we will eliminate the foreign aid they receive from us immediately.

If we want to talk about a guest worker program, of we want to labor, then we can do that as a separate initiative.

A wall is a good start. There are also tunnels large enough to drive small cars and rail trolleys through. These are mostly used to smuggle drugs into US but there are many of them, and more being built every day. Some terminate inside houses so it's very hard to detect any movements. They additionally use vehicles of all types, boats, trains and even shipping containers. So any that believe a wall will solve all the problems is being overly optimistic. It will help but is partially symbolic and fulfillment of a campaign promise. I read that if the wall was 24 ft it would spike sales of 20 ft ladders. That's just a way of saying it's not a total solution. So what's next, a couple thousand mile moat? The Rio Grande River should show the effectiveness of that, i.e. the term wetback.

Ever notice how countries that rigorously enforce their borders do not have illegal immigration problems? In some of those countries, the best case scenario is being sentenced to hard prison labor. Worst case you get shot on sight. Our border is a joke, on both the North and South sides. I have traveled areas of the northern border with Canada where you can go miles without seeing a fence let alone a checkpoint or border patrol guard. The irony is not lost on me considering one of the big missions in Afghanistan was teaching the Afghans how to do border security.

That wall is the dumbest idea in government history. They already dig tunnels, so how deep are you going to bury that wall? 20 feet, 100? Say you do do a 100. They'll simply dig 110. Or they'll rent a rowboat and row around the end of it, unless what, you're gonna put it 20 miles out to sea? Even if you did, they'd simply row 21 miles. We would not have to build a wall had we held Mexico to Fair Trade standards the last 20 years instead of ignoring them. China on a per capita basis has raised it's per capita income a LOT more than Mexico has and it does not have the same open NAFTA provisions. At least the Chinese government is not deliberately holding the living standards of it's people down and the Chinese people are benefiting directing from trade with the United States. Mexico.....not the same and even worse, the Democratic Party of the United States is openly helping the PRI Party in Mexico retain it's corruptive hold on the Mexican government and Mexicans will continue to suffer and see their living standards stagnate under that equation. Set specific targets for Mexico to achieve in living standard improvement and if they miss them then slap on the tarriffs. Otherwise nothing will change as we have seen the last 20 years and we will continue to have a immigrant problem from the South engineered in part by the Democratic Party.

As the pic is to add humor to the subject, I will add my two cents in. To build an effective wall would probably entail digging deep into the ground and pouring concrete and having rebar. it would have to be so many feet thick and underground sensors to detect for drilling and or digging. The top would have to extend upwards at least 8 feet with barbed wire, lights, sensirs, etc.- This would be long and costly to build and its effectiveness as a physical deterrent may or may not work long term.

In all honesty, the best way to deter is to remove the causation. How? now thats another subject altogether, but the question which could help is -what are the main reasons people are leaving thier countries and risking it all to get to America? When we can assist in eliminating those answers, there just might be less people coming

Our larger immigration problem has little to do with Mexico. Many came here legally, then illegally outstayed their visas (work/student/tourist/etc). The numbers of those coming through the southern border are only a small percentage.

I like the image somewhat. I am native Tuscarora Onondaga Cherokee mix. What we need is to stop the flow and remove the illegals of all who are here. Illegals. Not card holders or those trying to become citizens. Now to the biggest issue. I grew up working and worked at flipping burgers to pizzas and when I turned 17 I had my dad sign the papers to join the USAF Res. then went active duty. Todays young generation will not even try to earn a $$$ because home (mom and dad/parents) do not make them learn to earn. You want something earn it..if not do with out. I see you kids with all the electronics and devices controlling their life and the parents just giving them what ever they want. "I do not want my kid to go with out!" is the battle cry or "I do not want my kid to not have like I did growing up!" is the other battle cry. I have worked picking cotton to snap peas to corn to tobacco etc. Hahaha hell I have even had to move the old out house prime the outside pump heat water with wood ... you get the idea. I remember 1 house we lived in did not have electricity and I will say those had to be the best days for me back then.

My point is illegals do a lot of jobs today that you can not get the young generation to do. They are to good to do those jobs. Easier to make money stealing selling drugs prostitution etc. Most of what needs to be done is better family and home structure. Here in S.C. and N.C. we had the textile market go to hell after NAFTA moved our jobs to other countries. Yet every one from those countries want to come here...why...because of those countries governments are robbing them blind. Most do not know Mexico has built 1 wall already to stop the influx of refugees crossing from central America for jobs. Oh well who would figure?

1) We should set up a guest worker program, because you don't need to be a citizen to work here or receive a fair wage.
2) We should establish ID cards if you want to enter the country.
3) If you are in the country without an ID, we deport you. (So go ask for one. We should give a grace period to allow every alien a chance to get one.)
4) If you commit a crime, we take away your ID and deport you. You never get another one, and we have your fingerprints.
5) Such a system would encourage people to obey our laws. Such a system would also reduce the number of people entering illegally, which means smugglers and terrorist would have a smaller crowd to hide in.
6) The wall I would build would consist of drones, surveillance towers, and INS patrols able to enforce our laws.

I support open immigration, but ONLY if you cannot immigrate to the welfare system. Open welfare and open immigration are incompatible. I know there are people (fanatics) who think that makes me stingy and a racist. But I note how easy it is for them to be generous with my tax dollars. I don't have any problem at all with them spending their own money to help legal or illegal immigrants as much as they want.

The wall will start in California and be called "The Great Wall of Chino" and end in Texas and be called "The Yellow Wall of Texas" Use union and non-union workers and make it a contest like the Trans-Continental Railroad was and challenge both groups to push towards the middle and complete it in record times. Ask illegals trying to sneak across the border to work, building movable dormitories for the workers and if they stay on the job site and contribute they can fast track immigration and get their Social Security Cards and citizenship quicker. Install sensors in the ground and cameras to locate border incursion attempts. Bring our troops home from countries that really don't want us there in the first place and put them to work guarding our borders.

Just like before with the current "wall"... if you build a wall then they tunnel under it is all! Need much more than a wall... they would just start getting into a boat then land on the other side maybe... What is really needed is something like (and I am probably going to get dinged for this) a national ID with frequent secondary checks like when getting hired, collecting welfare or other government bennies, registering a car, getting a driver's license, and on and on...with fingerprint verification along the way! AND any ILLEGAL types identified and caught, RAPID (Like maybe next day) PROCESS DEPORTATION!

Use it as training for our Troopers. Many things to learn , and a good place to learn combat skills ! Embed Law Officers with us . We have more physical barriers, technology and border patrol agents guarding the border than ever before in the history of this nation. Despite that, the border is not really any more secure than it was decades ago... despite all that, the fact remains that if there is work here in the US, desperate people will find a way to do that work. If there is a demand from illegal drugs, cartels will find a way to supply that demand. If we want to solve the problem we need to create the means by which all those workers can enter the country legally, make it so that Americans are willing to work those jobs by raising the pay and benefits of those positions, and/or make the risk of hiring illegal workers unacceptable to business. Building more walls and hiring more agents is nothing more than a jobs program that produces nothing, if we are going to spend billions on a job program lets rebuild and add infrastructure.

Simple answer, make it UNattractive to be here illegally. Really crack down on those who hire them (no job, no cash, no food... no life here, go home!) Catch them, deal with them swiftly and firmly. A physical wall isn't the answer (tunnel under it, go to Canada and cross in just about anywhere, get a boat and row around the wall, get a tourist visa and just don't leave etc. etc.) , a strong "administrative wall" can do so much more so much more cheaply. But do we as a nation of "bleeding hearts" have the will to really accomplish anything? I am not sure from all I see these days.
