I believe they updated the Purple Heart to allow for friendly fire, but again only if in a combat environment.

However, you may be able to recognize individuals who under the given situation took appropriate actions or rendered aid. For example, I know of a Soldier who was injured in a rollover. While injured he took control of the scene, called for aid, got his fellow Soldiers out of the vehicle, and provided what medical aid he could until help arrived. In effect you must be in a Combat Theatre and be injured in combat to receive the Purple Heart. Mind you I was told this in 2001, but I have read the regulation and its very clear on how or when it was awarded. If you are looking for promotion points, I would direct you towards volunteering for training such as Air Assault, Soldier's Leadership Development Course, PLDC, HazMat, and other assorted training as it will get you points quickly. While I agree the Purple Heart is an earned medal for being injured during combat, there should be something for soldiers who are permanently injured during non-combat related incidents that recognizes their sacrifice for their country. Sure they get VA benefits but frankly they treat you like they are doing you a favor. I would not be opposed to a medal of some sort for those with a permanent disability that was caused by no blatantly negligent fault of their own. A vet in a wheelchair the rest of their lives is still vet in a wheelchair the rest of their life because of their service. Training to face the enemy can be dangerous when dealing with things like armored vehicles and explosives. A purple heart is for those who faced the enemy. Perhaps a DOD medal awarded post discharge for people deemed at least 50% disabled getting the lowest level of award and 100% permanent and total getting the highest. Something like a medal with Caduceus on it called the Sacrifice Through Service award. Just something saying we see you and your Country thanks you for your sacrifice. Again not to compete with the PH which is always held in the highest esteem because it includes a level of bravery and risk of death at the hands of the enemy. This would just be a recognition of self sacrifice while in the service of your Country. SPC Terry Roy Sat, 13 Nov 2021 12:25:52 -0500 2021-11-13T12:25:52-05:00 Response by SPC Roger D.
