If a senior service member has a clear bias against you, how should it be handled?

SN Bryan King I'm sorry to hear you had to go through that during your time in the service. Its too bad you couldn't invite them to join RallyPoint, then some of us other Senior Officers could counsel them on not to show bias towards anyone they are in charge of! There is nothing to be done now but I would advise anyone to go see their Chief first, then up the chain until you get results or they may find out they were in the wrong

I'm not sure of all the details of your situation but I would suggest trying to speak to the person directly. Ask to speak in private and see what issues, if any at all, are causing the problem.

As long as you remain respectful and professional, the person should reciprocate that. If they don't I would suggest going to their supervisor, and also let your command know you are going to do that. They can't prevent you from speaking to your Chief or higher, as long as you went up the chain and did what you were supposed to as much as you could.

I spent 10 years in the Coast Guard. There was always someone at the unit that didn't like me for whatever reason. I usually worked harder and also worked to make that person have that bias towards me grow even more. It was the best when they couldn't do anything about what I was doing. I was on a ship at one point in my career and had a first class who did not like how I did things. Mind you I was a Boatswain's Mate and had at least 30-40 people under me. I also had the respect of the CO and he acknowledge that I knew what I was doing. Once word of that spread around, I was on "easy street". I also was in a position that the person who did not like me couldn't do anything about how I did things or what I did. This is the first time I have thought about any of those people who had any kind of bias towards me. I simply do not care. After all, they cannot do anything about it or to me now. And I agree that since it was so long ago, you need to let it go and move on with your life. They cannot affect you or have any kind of say in what you do today.

Always try to handle it at the lowest level at first by addressing it with the member professionally. If that doesn't work, begin working your way up the chain of command. if you are not getting help, seek out your Command Senior Enlisted member and Civil Rights staff for additional help.
