The trick is to know if the current valley is temporary or permanent. I argue it is too soon to tell and could be either. If we produce leaders for the nation then the current valley is temporary. If not it will be permanent and get worse.
- Some things change while some things do. Things that do not change include human nature, the terrain (generally speaking), basic reasons for conflict. Things that do change include technology, human understanding, rate of technology change.
- Historically, empires rise and fall (Byzantine, Persian, Roman, Mongol, British, etc). The length of their supremacy varies from as little as 80 years to over 500 years. If you think the US is an empire then we have only been an empire for a little over 100 years. Generally empires fall either because they corrupt from the inside (Roman), face a new external threat (Ottoman), or a combination of both. I think the US's main problem right now is an internal problem. We are generaly getting dumber, fatter, and listening to the fringes on both the left and right rather than working the compromise in the middle which is what we historically have done.Response by COL Jason Smallfield, PMP, CFM, CM made Oct 31 at 2014 9:23 AM2014-10-31T09:23:14-04:002014-10-31T09:23:14-04:00CPT Zachary Brooks302954

This is a thought that crosses my mind often and as a young man, not yet 30, who is recently married and wants to start a family I fear for what my children will face. I already had a more difficult time making a career and being successful than my father did and I expect it to get worse for my children.

Its a sad place to be when you are not even 30 and you fear for your and your families future.
