I've been retired for 3 years, what are my prospects for re-entering the reserves and getting back in where I was?

I don't know about CSM , however a friend and Soldier of mine retired as a 1SG. I told him then that he wasn't ready as he was still fit, doing an awesome job and enjoyed the service. He was out two years and came back in, the Army brought him back at MSG and he worked with dignified transfers. That was back 2010 time frame. I would contact your Regimental CSM and see if you could get them on board they would know where and if there was a need for SGM in your branch. The problem with bringing us old dogs back is that it stymies a young buck from progressing.

If your took a federal active service retirement, your prospects are about as likely as rising from the dead at the moment.

On the officer side, that category, out for 3+ years is the lowest category considered for recall/return to AD.

Why? Most E9s hang around way too long. Let some new blood run things. You had your chance, let a deserving E8 move into that E9 slot you would take up.

CSM, did you take a Reserve or Active Duty retirement? If reserve, reach out to SLDO at HRC to discuss retired reserve to IRR options, then work with a 79V retention NCO to transfer to a TPU. Message me if you want a POC.

CSM - a lot would depend upon if you are needed in a particular spot, Honestly, I agree with many responses here suggesting letting younger hard chargers get that slot, as you have had that opportunity. I get that civilian life is not the same, and there are many aspects of my military life I miss, so I can empathize with you, but, your time has past, and much has changed since we both retired in 2015. Time to let the younger generation take the lead, because it's going to happen regardless.

I know a CSM who came out of retirement a few years back but had to come back as a MSG.
