SSG Adam Reed 498438 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>What do you do when confronted with signing a document you know is not legitimate. Here&#39;s my story. I was in a ten man Engineer Detachment that was all enlisted soldiers. There were no officer slots in the unit. The highest rank was E-7, who was the Commander. I was second in charge as an E-6. And since we had no 1SG we reported directly to the BN CSM. As the second in command of the unit it was my job to write the NCOER&#39;s for the two E-5&#39;s in the unit. So one year after writing them I turned them in for higher signatures. They both got approved and all was good. Then came time to sign my own NCOER which came from BN because now the E-7 was no longer in the unit. My NCOER came back from BN and I noticed it was exactly the same one I wrote for one of the E-5&#39;s. All they did was cut, copy and paste. I refused to sign it and of course got my ass chewed. I actually refuse to sign it many times until it was written correctly. This caused a lot of turbulence throughout the command because it showed some true colors of the higher ups. I even had a face to face with the person who supposedly wrote the NCOER. Needless to say he was many ranks above me and I had to use discretion. The process brought heat on me, not only form the writer of the NCOER but from other higher ups. In the end the NCOER was rewritten, but was very bland. Maybe it would have better to just take the first NCOER because it was actually better suited to show my performance. Would you have done the same? It is easy to forget that change has to start somewhere. Whether or not the outcome is perfect has nothing to do with the honest intention of attempting to improve.<br /><br />I try to stand up for what I believe is right in most situations regardless of the expected outcome. Good on you, I would have done the exact same thing in your shoes. That's a pretty brutal way to get an evaluation. Good for you for standing up against it, but I do have some questions:<br />1. Did you show the rater of your NCOER the original document that you had written for the E5?<br />2. Did the CSM have situational awareness of this incident? Or was he the Rater? I'll let you decide how to answer this one...<br />3. Did you try to approach the Senior Rater or Reviewer on this matter?<br /><br />Had I been in your shoes (or boots, in this case), I would have offered assistance to the Rater to provide an NCOER that reflected your accomplishments while assigned to the Detachment. I'm pretty sure that your duties and responsibilities were a little more challenging than that of the Sergeants that you rated.
