I'm in Louisiana and looking for work but no one calls back. Any Suggestions?

I have applied to just about everything in my area and no one has called me back to say "You're hired". I have had a few interviews but so far, nothing. I'm at a loss as to what to do. I know they want degrees now (even to just work for UPS as a driver...) But I'm too finacially weak to attempt a degree and need money for bills, not for bills two or four years from now. Does anyone know what to do?

Private Security always welcomes Ex-Military and Ex-Cops as long as you can pass a background check. Not much but it is something while you work on other Avenues. Also have you got yourself a Linked-In Account. That seems to be the way to put yourself out there now days. If you do have a Linked In Account start networking yourself. There are a couple of things you can do. First is your resume. Second, are you networking your community. There is an event for some group or organization on most weekend. It will not pay you anything but have you considered volunteer work. Then there is LinkedIn, have you built a profile. Now for school, there are course you can take for free. Certifications that could be helpful. Look me up on LinkedIn, email me your resume. I'll look it over and give feedback on it.

Check out referralkey.com as well, it's free and easy to find people. I also found my current job by placing my DA photo and a quick background on a Facebook group page created for local employers and employees to connect. My employer sought me out and gave me the job offer, i didn't even call him! So do a search for groups like that in your area. Hope this helps!

I was also in the California Natiomal guard. I could not find a job. But eventually I receive multiple job offers. I settle on the US Postal Service. Best Choice ever.

SPC Specht-It's a hard road, and I've been down it...keep the faith, and don't give up.

Louisiana is a great place for the Oil & Gas industry; things are slowing down right now because of the low cost of fuel, but that could turn the other direction. Take a long look at the things you've accomplished over the last few years, and ask yourself how similar those responsibilities and skills are to working with some of the best on the pipelines. Also, I have a close friend and former E-5, who ended up working for the Forestry Service; first, in less challenging positions, but within a couple years, made the "Yellow Shirts" and works six months a year, making more than I do at my desk job.

Best of Luck Brother...sure wish I had a spot here in Tennessee to offer.

Can you share some job listings? I looked at Best Buy in my area and there was two seasonal jobs but they didn't require a degree. My father has been telling me to try for Geeksquad since I know a lot about home theater and electronics but the Geeksquad they have near them is HUGE...the best buys in my area, the geek squad is non-existent.

This may be due to the fact that geek squad is big business down here (lots of seniors who don't know any better) while in my area it's kind of the opposite. Anyway, I have applied for USPS - no dice and the career center here on Rallypoint has nothing for Tampa, FL other than seasonal jobs at sears (seasonal), a truck driving company (I have no no CDL and will presumably will not train; 3 months of experience required) and united health care which I am not a nurse or doctor and fine I'd be an CNA if needed but will not train.

Try USAjobs.com, they post all federal employee jobs on this site. I don't know if you've finished your first enlistment yet, but veterans get preferential treatment for federal jobs. You can upload your résumé and DD-214 online, then apply for jobs from your computer. You can also search for jobs in your area. If you live within driving distance of the Mississippi River, the Corps of Engineers is always looking for Deckhands on River Operations. Good Luck to you!
