I’m about to graduate 68w course and go to my NG unit. Now what? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/i-m-about-to-graduate-68w-course-and-go-to-my-ng-unit-now-what

I have so many options right now, and I can’t seem to figure out which route I should go. I’m not a young guy, so I’m limited by family and such. But, I’m willing to do what I can to go as far as I can. Can anyone share any of their stories? For example

Medical Ambulance Company or ASMC will provide medical evacuation services with army ambulances.

Medical Detachment: will provide support services like periodic health assessments or pre or post deployment Evals. These have providers, dentists, PA’s and med techs and medics

Combat Support Hospital: mobile field emergency rooms or pharmacies, imaging, surgery, intensive care unit.

Then you have infantry, cavalry, armor, aviation, all depending on which state you’re in where you’ll be able to use those 68w skills more often.

Once you have some seasoning you’ll eventually be able to transfer or put in special schools packets. Mind you, be good at PT, weapons, soldiering, and don’t get in trouble and you’ll go far.

First thing you do when you get to your first unit is meet everyone and then start poking and prodding for information on soldier development and promotions and learning more about the Army Values, Troop Leading Procedures, and knowing how to be a good Army steward. He/ She should have a training plan for you for both your CMF tasks as well as your METL task. Go to any and all trainings you can that will help you advance your career. It can be courses/ opportunities to expand your scope as a soldier as well. (Air assault, jump school) If you wanna be a F2 (flight medic) then go for it. If you wanna be a nurse than start now. Also look into other options you are interested in. (I.e. IPAP/ PA school, Med school etc.) don’t wait! Nobody is gonna look out for you better than you. You’d have to see how long you have to wait, but I’d do it if I knew what I know now. The recruiters tend to fail to mention there are higher medical programs and just go for the fast easy in.
