Thereafter, whenever I moved to a new locale (which was often), I registered as either a Democrat or a Republican, whichever was the dominant party. Why? Simply, I wanted to vote in the election that mattered. If the people of that district were going to elect the Democrat, I wanted to vote in their primary where the Democratic candidate was selected. Same for those districts that were predominantly Republican. However, in either case, I voted for whomever I perceived to be the best candidate in the general election.

That being said, my political ideology has never changed in all those years. I am a "liberal" in that I love individual liberty. I am a "conservative" in that I wish to conserve the liberties that are my natural right, the ones that the government wasn't supposed to infringe upon (but seems determined to).

These days, there are establishments in both parties that fail to reflect the priorities of those who profess allegiance to them. Both establishments are progressive in that they are reinterpreting the Constitution to fit their agenda. The Democratic establishment is more progressive than the Republican one. The general membership of both parties seem oblivious to this fact and vote slavishly for the chosen candidates, while the independents step in to decide elections.

And that's how it is in America these days... I'd caution against getting attached to any candidate this early in the game. Walker was supposed to be some "rising anti-establishment" star, and he came down hard. At this point, everyone's listening to everyone else, and repeating the same message over and over, and not really giving any concrete solutions. Next year, that's going to have to change. Either bring your A game, or take your B game to the bench. There are still too many candidates out there and the field needs to thin. But Hillary needs to figure out is she hurting the dems rather than helping with her issues and last name, the repubs need to find out the same with Trump, Huckabee, Jindal, and possibly Bush. And Biden's still a dark horse for the Dems keeping his decision close to the vest. Rubio has a pretty Conservative platform overall, and the types of people he'd attract from the Democratic Party are probably not happy with traditional Democratic platforms. Why not switch? What keeps you in the Democratic Party if Rubio is the kind of person you like?

For the record I'm not asking on an accusatory way; I'm genuinely curious. I used to be a Republican until I realized one day that I was only "hanging on" for a couple of reasons, and that on most things my perspective had shifted to the point where I felt more comfortable among the Democratic Party.

It's easy to change affiliation and if you're not comfortable, support a cause that won't make you feel like you have to compromise yourself. NEVER vote for the platform. That's as flimsy and as non-directional as a paper airplane.
