I heard that the Military is planning to raise the Retirement age to 62. How true is that ??

I have heard the same. Most civilian agencies are like that. Here in Florida you need either 30 years of service or be 60 to retire. And if you retire before 60 even with 30 years of service you will be heavily penalized with your pension Money

If this does happen anytime in the near future, you’ll be grandfathered in to the old system. But I doubt it, unless they’re talking about pushing the reserve pension back a little more.

Even the federal law enforcement side is 20-25 years, depending on age. So they’d probably change that one too.

If they made any changes, they wouldn’t be that drastic. I doubt they would push the age back 25 years. If anything, they’d change the computation again, like they did with BRS.

I do not know about the stay until 62 provision*. I think I do know that how long you can go before going on retainer depends on your rank, a CSM can stay longer than a MSG and a GO may stay longer than a LTC, for example, especially if the person is really wanted. However, I think it is TIS not a particular age. AAMEDS is an entirely different ball game, read in Army Times about a doc in Afghanistan that was in his 70s a while back.

If you “heard” this through unverified rumors and did not see anything in writing from the Department of Defense then it’s just hearsay. Recommendation...do your research first before presenting your questing here. If it isn’t written in a ALARACT Message, regulation, official military document, etc, it does not exist, it’s just gossip.... Good luck to you...

Haven’t heard that. There has been talk of similar actions on civilian side, so it wouldn’t surprise me.
Ups and downs: up-for a select group of people would be good (most wouldn’t physically be fit enough)-Age catches up and military life exacts a toll.
Down-in general terms, if it’s good for the government, it likely isn’t better for the servicemen. Kind of like when they change the retirement plan...
If they do lift the age, it will likely still follow to some degree the service limitations associated with ranks, meaning that longevity would remain based on profitability.

Where did you "hear" it from? I haven't seen anything like that.

So I just Googled it - and this came up from 2018.

That change to the maximum retirement age allows soldiers who enlist at ages above 34 to obtain 20 years of service, which is required in order for a soldier to be eligible for full retirement benefits."

I can't find anything since then. So it seems they did increase the mandatory retirement age because they increased the max enlistment age.

For me, an extension of eligibility would be a good thing. In my current situation I will bump into age 60 mandatory retirement with only 2.5 years TIG at E8 so the opportunity to finish my high 3 for retirement would be welcome.

Saw an ALARACT proposing to change enlistment age to 21 is floating around. That is all I have heard about anything concerning ages and military employment.
