I am wondering did the whole Army get new serial numbers a while back or just retirees?

After decades of having ones serial number stenciled on duffel bags, printed on all sorts of cards and papers, verbally said, etc. I am told we need to change serial numbers again, for security it is said. My 8th NG, RA (2), ER, E, O, no prefix and new one.

I guess that may be new name for serial number. In same spot on ID card that had serial number.

When I was in they did everything by SSN, even on my dog tags. I don't know who came up with that system but it wasn't a good idea. I hope they changed it.

It came about when the law was changed that prohibited SSAN from being used for ID. First ones had E prefix for Enlisted, W for WOs and O for Officers. That was two of my 8 serial numbers, ESSAN and OSSAN. BTW, I never changed my dog tags and used my second RA number from 1965 when I got it until now.

MAJ Ronnie Reams I'm glad they changed that. I remember duty rosters being posted with people's SSNs.

I still have my SSN on my dog tags. I have never received new ones and well to lazy to pay for new ones. LOL

My first SN was 05000000. Then it was my SSN 000-00-0000. So changing SN’s is nothing new in the US Military.

There was an E, W or O prefix between older SNs and just the SSAN. Like you prolly had OSSAN before just SSAN.
