Afghanistan, etc...it's also based on ur current commands operational mission if they can release you are not! If your rate is being requested by the type commander each command has to at least provide a number of designated rates required. Bring it up at quarters. If you're with a deploy-able unit, your chances of going are near zero. Wait for shore duty. I personally don't understand why sailors jump at the chance to do this. You're a PO. You're a professional, you're a war fighter, and god forbid that you ever deploy and get into a fight at sea where you take casualties, you'll no doubt be able to tell Marine and Army buddies sea stories that will give them nightmares. NSIPS generates manpower documents and reports for each unit and includes the status for each member. Talk to someone in your unit first as some members may have been through the process and certainly to your NOSC manpower office. Manpower can answer most of your questions on the actual IA process. If you can find a copy of the Navy Times, it shows where our units are deployed and the number of personnel in the Navy by category (Active duty, SELRES, etc.). I didn't actually go on the IA nor I was interested. However, I was viewed as such a technical expert in my rate (logistics specialist), I was considered invaluable enough to be ordered to attend training for the team that closed down Al Asad in Fort Dix. If it was anything like in the past (5 plus years ago for me) they want E-5's and up preferably. However, there were a few E-4s with one that had only 2 years of experience. Since you are an E-4, network and do what you can to be considered as a technical expert throughout the fleet. By the time I was selected for IA training I served in Japan, Sicily, and Middle East. I had my EAWS pin. List any deployments, detachments, and/or overseas tours you have done. Do you have any warfare qualifications? Do you have marksmanship ribbons? Show the Navy (whether your chain of command or elsewhere) you can handle significant positional authority. I have left the Navy several years ago due to developing epilepsy. But before I left, I was an LS2 (AW) up for LS1 and the name of the game for getting more responsibility, more rank is to prove your chain of command and the Navy as a whole that you can handle more positional authority. Ask yourself these questions: Do you have your warfare qualification?, What deployments did you serve on? Do you have marksmanship ribbons (you will be undergoing Army/Marine style training)? What kinds of command collateral duties have you done? I was selected as an IA alternate (and I didn't even campaign for it) to possibly be on the staff to help close down the Al Asad base.
