I imagine it has changed a lot, especially Monterey & surrounding areas. When I was there, Cannery Row was just a lot of abandoned canneries. Now it is a highly developed tourist area. As for the school, you are going there in a very digital/technological time, much different than when I went. However, I'm sure you will get as great professors as I had. We lived in barracks with twp-person rooms. I have no idea what living quarters are like now. Most importantly, though, your brain will be challenged. Study hard & take advantage of all the learning methods available, then you will attain a great sense of accomplishment & pride. I believe you will never forget your time there. I wish you the very best in your pursuit there & as a cryptologist. Carry on, young man. SP6 Ron W. Go to study hall every night and be prepared to study. I was there 2011-2012 for Chinese Mandarin, there are so many opportunities to gain knowledge keep all of your resources, gain contacts, and keep your ass out of trouble. My favorite part was running the warf in the mornings. Make sure you take part of your weekend to go out and enjoy life. I had every Russian course they offered starting with Basic Russian in 1978 working my way through Intermediate, Advanced and the Interpreter's course. Of the Russian Department at that time my instructors were for the most part outstanding and some of the most interesting people I have ever met. They have probably all retired by now. The area is beautiful, the coursework was challenging at times but always rewarding. It's the best job I've ever had! Good luck and enjoy yourself! As prior service, you'll be above most of the BS. Just be careful about fraternization. The area is beautiful, one of the Army's hidden secrets. The coursework can be very stressful, but it's an awesome way to learn a language. You're looking at 8 solid hours of class with 2+ hours of homework, plus PT, and whatever other ancillary training comes up. If you're a MOS-T, do NOT be anywhere near the IET soldiers anytime off duty. You WILL lose rank, even if you're doing the right thing like helping someone out.
