18 years ago, my POV was really screwed up in the shipment back to CONUS from Hawaii. But maybe they do a better job nowadays.

Be prepared for lots of field time and lots of time off. Plus if you’re gonna life off post then I suggest start looking now.

Hit the ground running! Get a book called "Oahu Revealed" and use it to plan the beaches you want to visit, hiking, surfing, restaurants, fishing trips, anything about the island that you might want to try will be in that book. Life is expensive there, but there's tons to do that's free or cheap if you look for it. Take tons of pictures and enjoy the island lifestyle while you are there. For me, I had a great time but was ready to get back to the mainland when my tour was up.

Be all that you can be up front, cause the Army loves such persona reporting to the 25th ID. Preference on-post housing on Shafter, Tripler, Joint Base Pearl-Hickam, Schofield or even Halemanu. You can try off-post housing in Waipahu. Once family is settled, concentrating on your inprocess is best advised. Don't get too eager to call upon your assigned unit prior to the tail end of your Reception; units love to pile-on homework on their fresh blood. Just go with the flow from Arrival thru Reception to Integration - two full weeks of acclamation; enjoy all of it while getting settled.

Yes get ready for climbing/walking up one of the steepest roads you've ever seen.Definitely go to North Shore when the big waves arrive.I served there in 72 and 73.It was as humid as anywhere I've ever been.I tried to crawl back into the plane. Hahaha. Stay away from Hotel street because there's nothing there but strip joints and hookers.Take advantage of island hoping.Oahu is a beautiful beach but take advantage of the whole island. Schofield Barracks was one of the best duty stations I've ever had the privilege to serve at. I lived in Waipahu.It's not far from the base and check into getting a place before you get there if you want to live off base.Have a great time.You will not be lacking any physical training at all

Stay active. There’s a lot to do on the island. It’s just up to you to adventure it. Know that it’s an island not a lot road trip but trust, there’s always events every weekend.

Plan where you live and work some what off H1 becoming a parking lot from 1500-1800 and to a lesser degree in the am. Ewa Beach was cheaper living and K-bay on windward nicer living. If you like life a little quieter, the North shore is wonderful.

Chief, just come ready to train yourself and your troops. land is difficult to obtain so if you need it have an idea what you like to improve upon as a leader and fighting force so you cam determine how best to execute once you arrive. with 2 artillery BNs on ground and Marines that come to train at SBHI there opportunities there. After you have that on lock there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy most center around fitness hiking and running groups, land clean-up groups, year round sports for kids that always need coaches, plenty of food events to enjoy, learn scuba and skin diving. the list goes on - But Chief - First and foremost; we train.

Go see the other islands when you can. Hawaii (big island) is very different from Maui, which is different from Oahu, which is different from.......kind like how tourists only see New York City or DC and think that’s what the rest of America is like, without seeing Dalton, Indiana or Honea Path, South Carolina or Wayne, Texas or any other small town. See outside Honolulu, and outside Oahu.

There are 6 of the 8 islands you can go to. Find the ancient sites, enjoy the culture, go local!

Bias warning: my wife’s Hawaiian, from cowboy country on Maui.
