I did it to be more marketable in marine electronics as well as getting some sailing time.<br /><br />That being said, the watercraft field is a completely different animal from the aviation side. I never got assigned to an ocean going vessel.<br /><br />I did recently work as a contractor supporting the marine electronics on board the Army vessels. They do deploy a lot. As an 88K you do a lot of deck maintenance ( chipping paint, cleaning, painting, deck PM's, etc.). Have you looked at 88L? They maintain and repair the engines, machinery and electrical. <br /><br />Best of luck! Depending on what size vessel your assigned to, would determine how much knowledge you would have to learn.<br />Your first level would be Seaman. You would have to learn knots (nautical type), fire fighting, Seamenship...<br />Second level: Coxwain. depending on the size of the vessel this could be considered the captain of the boat. Otherwise, the larger vessels have WO, CWO and I beleive officers. <br /> If you love the water, this would be a great career.
