I am about a year out from my Bachelors in Management. Should I stay with my current company or move on to greener pastures?

I am currently a Security trainer at a medium sized casino on a Indian reservation I live on. I am completely satisfied about where I am at. I just wonder if I am will be underemployed once I receive my degree. I will have advancement opportunities here, but will be at a crossroads in a year or so.

Make sure you have another job lined up first, read reviews on said company (from employees and customers)

You should also work on your leadership abilities. I received a BS in Management but have learned more about leader from leadership courses than any of the management courses I ever took. In management you learn how processes and systems work and how to get the most from them. Problem is the system or process is only as good as the people that takce care of them. Civilian life requires a more personal touch to get others to follow you. The 4 things that have helped me the most is to be sure I MODEL what I expect and that means guarding my integrity and character. Then you can start to MOTIVATE you will not motivate anyone if you do not model first motivate by encouraging and nurturing to make a couple areas to concentrate. Now that they are starting to really trust you it is time to MENTOR this is where you start to empower others and help people to navigate through the round patches so they can even more empowered. Now you are ready for the big one MULTIPLY when you have taught people now how to model, motivate, and mentor for others you have created multipliers very few people take their up and coming leaders to this point but they all have the potential if they made it here. That is the quick and dirty answer the long answer is a 6 to 8 week course that focuses on these 4 areas. The question you have to ask yourself is do you really really enjoy what you are doing? Why do you enjoy it? What are you looking for in the greener pastures. If you start working on those 4 areas in your life you may find that you have everything you need right where you are. The reason to leave is when you have reached the top of your leadership ladder and need to move to where people are ahead of you. You should always work where others are ahead of you so you can keep learning. All these questions are questions you should answer for yourself. Do not let anyone advise you on what you should do. Every move you make should be for more opportunity. Move however you want but always make sure it is for opportunity because everything else will come, if there is opportunity advancement will come.

It's imperative that you look at what your company can offer you first. Are they paying you or reimbursing you to achieve your degree? If so, you may want to see what you can do for them to help them move forward. If not, you should look at other opportunities that you can utilize your Military skills to enhance your career path. Polish your resume, apply for positions of greater responsibility within the company and apply to other companies. You may be surprised by the offers you get from both.
