You have to get assessed after your junior year. Based on your GPA, PT score, extracurriculars, and your performance at advanced camp, you get picked for whatever branch the army decides you’re needed in. You get to rank the branches from highest to lowest preference. That being said, it doesn’t matter sometimes. I know someone who ranked infantry dead last and had a recommendation from their PMS to not put that person in the infantry branch and they still got infantry. Most of the people in my class got one of their top 3 picks so it’s pretty rare for that situation to happen, but it does happen. My advice is to excel in all your activities and rank armor as your number 1 choice, but be prepared that you might not get exactly what you want. Fort Bliss and Ft Hood Texas are the permanent duty stations for First Armored and First Cavalry. There are about 16000 in a Division, give or take. Most branches are in there. On the flip side, there are Armor officers through out the Army, even places without Tanks, like the 101st, 10th Mtn, and 82d. The RSTA Sqdns have 19 series people.

Are you looking being an Armor Branch Officer or serve in an Armored Division? You could be in an Armored Division and not be in an AR unit at the Co, BN, or BDE level. They'd have a better idea of the current needs and trends. Without that, nothing else will matter. Once you get into college, than you will need to enroll in the Military Science classes. In the end, your final order of merit score which determines which component and which branch is based 40% on your grades at the end of your junior year, 15% on your physical fitness test scores and the remainder based on performance as a cadet, performance at Advanced Camp, and other activities you are in. So what this means is that you need to stay focused academically because mediocre grades will not get you Armor Branch and possibly not even active duty.
