How well does deterrence still work?

How deterrence is changing, how well does deterrence still work? Can Cold War-era ideas still keep the peace in a new era cyber and space?

To speak on the cyber prospective deterrence only works if we can deliver offensively should our defenses be broken...which they have in the past. We only pose a threat for now should any cyber war escalate I fear we may be out matched.

TSgt Private RallyPoint Member - Considering the US is the only nation in history to use our "strategic assets," I'd have to say it's working just fine. Those who wish us immediate harm without reprisal have yet to produce the capability to deliver. Unfortunately, nuclear deterrence is of no concern to cave-dwelling, goat-farmers who speak Farsi.

Deterrence only works when the other guys fear death and destruction. When you talk about jihadis and their failed nations, and their belief that death in battle with an enemy is a good thing, I think that the concept of deterrence has been lost.

In the context of nuclear weapons, that's a good question. In the context of conventional weapons, the answer is yes. Just look back to any time when a country's leader decided to do some sabre rattling. That stopped soon after one of our carrier strike groups appeared off the coast of that country.
