When you deploy, they try to align you with a unit with your skill set. If a unit deploys, they do their best to send a unit at full strength. They can send you individually and place you in a position already there. Now we all know in the end we all do "what we are told, when we are told and how we are told". Once I deployed as the unit's 12B, yet I ended up doing the Operation Sergeants job along with it. Reserve/Guard units are very unique when deployed. If you have a civilian skill which will greatly advance the mission, you will be called upon to apply that skill. While in Kuwait, I walked out the back of the messhall. I saw two soldiers talking about a refer unit which was not running. I asked the Mess SGT what the problem was, he told me the unit was running but not cooling. I had them get me a ladder, climbed up, inspected the Thermoking reefer unit. Asked them to get me a hammer. I tapped the three way valve, it began to cycle. In civilian life I once had been a certified Thermo King Reefer mechanic. Don't get me wrong, if you deploy as an individual or as part of a unit, you will be expected to know your job at the level you are qualified for, same for AD or Reserve, no difference. Biggest difference between the two is Reserve/Guard soldiers usually have more to offer.
