I have a soldier (88M) that has been diagnosed with a heart problem. Soldier was in the process of chapter before the diagnoses for always being late. Now that the soldier has been diagnosed all chapter process has stopped because of pending Med Board (at least 8 more months because of treatment needed). Soldier has a Dead man Profile can’t be outside if temp is below a certain temp or above a certain temp. No lifting, bending, standing, or climbing. No ACH or other gear. Ok now the problem we are having. Soldier has difficulties waking up in the morning he claims it’s because of the heart condition. We call ever morning no response, we send people by is on post house no response. We have counseled this soldier 14 in the last 60 days for FTR. We are being told to just keep counseling him for being late. The soldier is no help to the unit or mission we are already at 50% manning. I have exhausted every idea that we can think of. What myself and the soldier have talked about trying to send him to WTU but according to his case manager she said he does not fit the requirements to go. Can anybody point me in the best direction for this soldier’s best needs?

The chain of command must submit a unit nomination packet for the SM, for consideration for acceptance into the WTU. I was an S-4 in a WTU.

Would you happen to know if there are other methods to get into the wtu? I have been told that I have to go through my PCM yet my unit has made it noticeable that they wish they had another "usable" soldier in my stead. I don't think they know how the wtu works and I definitely don't know. Do you have my advice or at least some I can pass on to my COC?

I am a WTU Squad Leader and the only way for an active duty SM to get in the WTU program is by the chain of command submitting a unit nomination packet. What you can do is go to the WTU on your post and ask them to email your commander the packet. Your commander will fill it out and submit it and yes as long as there is room at the WTU for him then they will take him. However he has to meet certain criteria and can't be too far along in the MEB Process. But its not really that hard to get him into the WTU.

Im not for sure but I would guess as close to a wtu that is near their home of record as they can get. Like if you are originally from oklahoma but your up in Maine doing your recruiting duty then they would probably pcs u to fort sill to join the wtu there. That's just my opinion on it as most of the Soldiers who came to us where from that state or in the region.

Can my CoC recommend me for the WTU while I'm waiting to have another surgery? So that I could possibly get orders to go as soon as the the surgeon releases me?

If you have availability put his ass in the barracks. Would be the same thing if 1SG put someone in a tent because their room was jacked.

Or do we no longer use that as a tool to correct "stupid"?

Actually, the response is "Stupid". Be very careful SSG b/c you could one day find yourself in these shoes. The Soldier may have a family, so why would you put the Soldier in the barracks? We must first be sure that there is a real underlying problem. Part of being a leader is to learn to have empathy and sympathy. Let your Soldier know you truly care about them. The physicians will make that decision about a medical condition. We can't say what a Soldier may or may not be feeling as far as pain, depression or otherwise. You do not have to be a hardass to be a great leader! Maybe take the time to do some research, then comment in an intellectual manner...HOAH. We have to protect ourselves too, so be knowledgeable about the facts. And no, we can no longer put Soldiers out in tents because they tend to practice bad health and welfare....but we can put them out of the military for failure to adapt. AR 27-10 for legal.

I don't know what you can do about that but that is an excuse that he is using cause I have a soldier that is going through an MEB for an enlarged heart and he makes formations in the morning with no problem. I hope that you find a way to handle this issue.

Why stop the chapter? You can chapter a potential med board just as easily as any other joe. If anything, it should give him incentive to show up. If the CoC is stopping the chapter because of hurt feelings all around, then you need to realize there is nothing you are going to be able to do to move him to a WTU at the Staff Sergeant level. Sadly, the WTU is full of reservists and NG members squatting and collecting the easiest AGR paycheck in the army. I've seen a soldier more then once get turned away because there simply isnt space there.

Have you tried to contact the WTU directly? If not, do so. Also, google will help you with anything. I had a Soldier in Korea that had a heart condition. First of all, the Soldier should have never been PCS'd to Korea with that type of medical issue. I am sure the PCM plays a big role in the decision process, but as CPT Kletzing stated, the chain of command must submit a unit nomination packet for the SM. Pertinent documentation will be provided by the medical center as part of the justification as to why the Soldier

Hey guys I have a question. I know a soldier thats having suicidal ideations. He is at one duty station and he is going to his next. Is it possible for him to get in wTU while improcessing onto his new base seeing that he hasnt been to his new unit as yet. What does he have to do? Any answers would help. Thanks

First of all SPC Chevon, why would they allow a SM with suicidal ideation to PCS? If this is the case, the Soldier should be in a treatment program. Also, the command should have the SM under suicide watch if they are aware of this. Once the SM is under medical care, then it will be up to the PCM or case worker to decide what should be done. The unit will then make the determination as you whether the Soldier needs to be processed out of the Army or receive further medical treatment.

I'm in the end part of my MEB and doing my VARR is there a while I can finish out my time at WTU. I'm being MEB for mental problems and have not been fit for duty or done my job since November of 2014. and I have a few for months. I really not giving the time to finish what is needed to be taking care of to transition out the military because they try to put us on details a lot is. who would I need to talk too to get out a mission ready unit if I have not been fit for duty since the beginning of 2014 and just holding a position just to meet numbers
