National security? Important. HUMAN RACE security? Absolutely essential. We're killing this planet. I am NOT a tree-hugger. But the fact is, resources on this rock are finite. And unless you can convince 8 billion people to curtail their reproductive urges (good luck with that), we ARE going to use this planet up. Ergo, we go out and find more resources...or we die off. Full stop.
