I only know what I've heard. Cold and isolated. My son is stationed at Elmendorf AFB (JBER) and they say that Wainwright is a lot colder and gets a bunch more snow. Good hunting from what I've heard from guys that were stationed at Eielson AFB. Good luck on your move. An assignment is what you make of it.

Wainwright was my first duty station 35 years ago - I loved it. I wouldn't have wanted to live off post as a single soldier (not sure they would have let me anyway). If you can deal with the cold and the long periods of "darkness" in the winter, you'll be just fine. And you can deal with the cold. Funny, I joined up in the time when they told me that I could get a guaranteed overseas assignment - the recruiter was like, "Germany, yeah! Girls and beer." I thought that was awesome until I got my orders. I went and found a drill sgt at Ft Benning and said, "uh, there's a problem with my orders". He was like, "there's no problem". I was like, "I'm not going to Alaska" and he was like "Yes you are" and I was like "no, no, I have orders for a guaranteed overseas assignment - I'm going to Germany!" (so there!). He just laughed and told me that the Army considered Alaska overseas. lol. I had a GREAT time there. If you like any kind of outdoor activity you'll love it.

Yeah I’m a super outdoorsmen kinda dude..shouldn’t be to bad..currently 11B right now but I reclassed to Aviation..

I loved it up there! Was stationed there from 08/81 to 10/82. With 47th Engineers.

I was there 6 years and loved it. Lots of outdoor activities, no state taxes and you get COLA.
