How robust is the concept of "professional development" in your unit/command?

How well known are these resources for members who wish to educate themselves? Does there exist regular outreach to members who may not know of these resources to provide them with guidance in utilizing them?

I as well as the 1SG pushed soldiers and NCO's to pursue professional and personal growth.

I had subordinate leaders who I evaluated every 90 days. I owe that to them. They need to know what they're doing wrong, what their doing right and what they can improve on. I never got that and I might be further along if I did but I don't hold that against anyone.

In my experience in the service there was very little in the way of a "hard" motivation for self-improvement unless someone was obviously deficient. Mind you it's been seven years since I was in, but that was my observation. At the time I knew no different. However, now that I'm int he civilian world with a company that not only actively promotes both professional and person development and goes as far as to set aside working hours to allow for it, I feel that this could be a major area for improvement (assuming the trend still stands since my leaving).

The research bears out, companies investing in training develop far more valuable human assets and increase retention and job satisfaction.
