I grew up with the USS Constellation, of course, being from Baltimore. Then there's that submarine moored in San Francisco. However, my greatest point of pride is that I am a living museum of nautical lore. I served several years as an able crewman on board the Brig Pilgrim at Dana Point, California. Inasmuch as we maintained and sailed her according to custom and practice of 1830, we kept alive the traditions as well as the skills needed to sail a tallship. We didn't have powered or geared winches to handle lines. Everything was done by brute strength and teamwork. And we sang the shanties of the era to coordinate our efforts. The rule on board the ship is that if Dana didn't do it, we didn't either. One of our least favorite chores every year was tarring the rigging. Climbing aloft with buckets of tar to coat every inch of the standing rigging is messy work. We had one set of clothes put away and dedicated to this task. (You could never get the tar out after it stained your clothing) Our only pay for all the work was the opportunity to sail it during a brief month of each year. We would sail it to harbors along the California coast to be left open to the public for tours and then return by bus to sail it to another. Forgive me for reminiscing. I had to give it up many years ago when a disease afflicted one of my inner ears and climbing masts with poor balance is a poor idea...
