I spent a semester full time at a local university and received my POST license. I also hired on at the jail for the county I wanted to work for and received my commision (power of arrest). Depending on the agency you want to try and go to, county or smaller, I would recomend working at the jail for said agency due to being able to learn the system they use and get to know the "clientele". If you are going to try to work state or federal, the academies for such should prep you as well as possible.

The biggest part of the transition is being able to amend your training to how you need to work in the real world. I use my school house CQB in SWAT but even that has different ways of dealing with things. We can't just go in a eleminate the threat, trying to talk the suspect out works much better. Little things like that.

The biggest thing is being open minded.

Stay safe.
