How long should it take to get a reinvestigation done on my secret clearance. I have had it 10 years needed it renewed.

I submitted it 3 months ago and have not heard anything back yet. It is usual to take this long for a recheck?

I know right now for my soldiers who put in for a clearance it is looking to take about 18 months. That's for a TS though, so your probably looking at 8-10 months. The person who would have the best answer would be your unit's S2 or your local SSO.

Your Unit Security Manager should be able to help you (I suppose your S-2?) When I needed my Secret Clearance renewed I think it took about 6 months (but there may have been a government shutdown during that time too). Hope this helps.

Remember what's happened in the last few years: OPM's e-Qip application was hacked, OPM contended with significant fraud in the investigations conducted by its own investigators (who are actually contracted out), and they missed some of the highest-profile individuals who had rampant warning signs (e.g. the Washington Navy Yard shooter).

All of this has let to a significant delay, as old investigations need to be reviewed and sometimes redone entirely, and a near-total stop of all investigations (like what happened for several months following the hack) just lets the backlog pile higher.

FWIW, I'm in a similar boat. I resubmitted my latest round 4 months ago, and it hasn't even been assigned an investigator according to the SSO (on my military side) and FSO (on my contractor side), and since mine is a TS review that requires more in-depth investigation including multiple interviews, that means I have quite a ways to go.

you can actually help yourself out with the investigation. When giving your references, try and see of you can provide names of individuals that may live in the same area. When I was up for my last clearance, most of the people that I gave were stationed at the same place, and the others were actually those that I worked with within the same building. So when one person was done with the investigator, the other went right in. The investigators have to try and talk to all of the people that you list, as well as other people that may come up during the course of the investigation. The more accurate the info you give, the faster you investigation will get completed.

There is a giant back log at the investigation department. If it is required speak to your PERSEC Manager about getting interm clearance, if not wait it out. S2 cannot do anything at the investigation level.
