How long does it take to go into the Inactive Ready Reserve from the USAR?

I have a friend who wants to get out of his Battalion and get into the inactive ready Reserve (IRR)so he could take his promotion and possibly go on a tour. He wants to get away from the flagpole and he speaks three languages . His command took their time to sign off and his Regional support command seems to have two speeds... Slow and stop!
What is a realistic timeline for getting into the IRR?

The first question I would ask is if they are eligible to go into the IRR based on their contract? If they are the soldiers S1 should be able to process the paperwork and like MSG (Join to see) said it typically takes less than a month.

Thank you! I went into the irr when I left the Idaho National Guard back in the spring of 2006. It took longer to get out of the irr then it took to get in it.

LTC (Join to see) - It's the Individual Ready Reserve. The Inactive National Guard is also an option but only for a year and extends your contract for the amount spent in the ING. The IRR gives you the same 15 membership points a year as a regular drilling reservist but has no requirement to drill outside a muster called by HRC. However, you can still do drills to gain 50 total points a year to stay on the active list. No such option exists for the ING though.

Thank you, I told this individual that he could stay in the irr and go on tours. His unit will not give him his promotion for at least 6 months and that is a no-go for him! He wants to go into the individual ready to reserve so he can take his promotion and then come back in and go on a one-year tour outside the United States and away from his unit. He has already spoken to the people he would be working for outside the USA going title 10 but he is in limbo if you can't get into the irr. They also require him to be at the next rank to fill that position. Thanks for your input!

I requested it in April of 2000, it was given the green light in July of that same year.
