Both Schofield and wheeler are excellent posts to be at you will be in the middle of the island between north shore and Honolulu. Enjoy it! Any type of a aviation unit (if that's where you're going to) is gonna be awesome man only major complaints is only two ways in and out of that side of post so expect possible traffic with getting on and off post SSG Private RallyPoint Member Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:26:19 -0500 2016-02-10T12:26:19-05:00 Response by CMSgt Mark Schubert made Feb 10 at 2016 12:31 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/how-is-wheeler-aaf-in-hawaii?n=1292975&urlhash=1292975 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>There's no such thing as a "bad" place in Hawaii! :-) CMSgt Mark Schubert Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:31:41 -0500 2016-02-10T12:31:41-05:00 Response by SPC James Dollins made Feb 10 at 2016 12:41 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/how-is-wheeler-aaf-in-hawaii?n=1293016&urlhash=1293016 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>I haven't been, BUT... Wheeler is really solid, plus you're in Hawaii and a short 10 min drive from the beautiful north shore, as well as a 20 min drive from Honolulu/Waikiki (in no traffic). Wheeler isn't the most up to date post facilities wise, but there are so many upsides to being there. I would go to Wheeler in a heartbeat if I was you. Housing is really nice as well. Can't speak for the barracks as I was married at the time so I lived in on-base housing. You've got a LOT of free things to do while being stationed there, all within about 30 minutes drive time. Newer housing was being put in on both the Wheeler and Schofield sides. North shore is not to far away and traffic isn't bad. Most of the facilities are on the Schofield side. There is a gym and small shoppette though. Wahiawa is a typical town you find close to posts, but does have some good places to eat. There is good hiking close by - just watch out for pigs and don't get lost. Driving down to Waikiki on a Friday or Saturday night will take about 45-60 min. depending on the traffic (and there's always traffic). Overall good place, but just like any place, you have to get off post. But like all duty stations wheather or not it is heaven or hell , depends on the unit you are in and your immediate commanders. A few assholes can ruin even a good station. I'd take my chances and do Hawaii, if I had the chance.
