I love this assignment. I've spent the last 6 months in our "off" season, which typically consists of doing PT on your own (morning or afternoon), being at work by 0900, and being released between 1200 and 1500, depending on whats going on. On average I am home or at the gym by 1400. Training season starts in June and that consists of 7 day work weeks and much longer days, while the rotating unit is here for training. All of the short days and days off during the off season more than make up for the long days during the training season. During the off season I have gone TDY about once month or every other month to meet with our partner reserve units to assist them with training and planning for training. Typically, its only for a few days at a time. If you want family time or time for online college, this is the perfect assignment. Now on to the location. Having recently taken up the sport of bow hunting, I love the area. Sparta and Tomah have lots of playgrounds and parks for the kids as well as a few good places to eat and buy things. Onalaska is about 30 minutes away and it has pretty much everything you would find in a city. If you are a city person and like nightclubs and live music, you will have to drive a bit to get your entertainment. So far I have not found any cons to this assignment. If you like deer /turkey hunting, take online college courses, or need an assignment that gives you an absurd amount of family time, this is it. Also if you want Army schools, this unit will send you to any school you qualify for all throughout the off-season.
