Our commo guys spent a lot of time with the battery doing the same training we did. I didn't really view them any differently than any other soldier. I'd say that was likely the feeling for most of the battery as well.
The commo NCO did a lot of 'work' for the battery when he wasn't working on commo stuff and we got a enlisted man a bit later in my time there who helped out as well. When we were down range the NCO ended up running the CP and making sure our fill was good etc.

The barracks are right across from the MWR building so it should be a short walk should you want to go there. Most of the guys hung around the barracks but the bars off post were also popular for the single soldiers. Fairbanks has a lot of 'normal' stores like Walmart, Barnes & Noble, and all kinds of other stuff you'd find in any other city. Also lots of smaller shops of interest like touristy stuff and a comic shop.

Hope this help. I want to go back. The area is great and very military friendly. Go eat at The Cookie Jar. However, at that time there was plenty of stuff for a single soldier to do. If you like the outdoors, you'll enjoy. I am sure that over the last 30 years, this has only improved.

As for your question about a commo guy in an FA unit, I served with the 2/82 FA out of Friedberg Germany and enjoyed it, although not as much as my time in an Infantry unit. It is what you make of it, but I am sure that you will be fine. Response by SSG David Bean made Feb 15 at 2019 3:26 PM 2019-02-15T15:26:48-05:00 2019-02-15T15:26:48-05:00 2019-02-14T12:59:05-05:00
