How is an SF 86 National Security investigation adjudicated?

If a government agency initiates a National Security investigation on an individual and the individual no longer belongs to the agency that initiated the investigation and the investigation continues for seven years or more, who does the individual contact to determine whether the investigation is adjudicated?

It's been awhile since I was working in the area, but as I understand it, DSS (http://www.dss.mil/) is the agency you would need to contact.

If you have a local SSO they can look you up to see your status. Every agency should have some kind of SSO element that can look you up, an issue you may find is that DoD and Civilian agencies use two different databases and they did not always speak to each other.

The individual does not contact anyone but the gaining command/unit/company. The new unit's SSO/Security Manager can check status of your clearance. If you are trying to determine dates for a resume, you might be able to contact your previous unit's SSO/Security Manager to find out when you last investigation was adjudicated.
