I have been an 89b for 10 years, TSgt LaPointe hit it on the head! Being an ammunition specialist is an easy job we basically do shipping and recieving for ammunition.
The 2 best things I can tell you is 1st and most importantly KNOW the regulations!!!! The higher you get in the ranks the more your job becomes about keeping your commander out of jail and less about shipping and recieving. So know the regulations, the more you know now the better your career will be.
Secondly if you can go Airborne and go to a SOF unit! As an 89B one of the best things you can do for your career is get stationed with a special operations unit. you will learn more about your job in 1 year with a SOF unit then most 89b's learn in 10 years in any other army unit.
Congrats again, I hope you enjoy your upcoming training! take it for what it is and you will learn alot. If you need help or need advice let me know. Good luck! You start running your own ammunition points, FARPS, etc... and start taking charge of and teaching all of the above. Once you hit Staff it's predominantly account management and ammunition logistics at different levels, generally working out of SPO's. We also have opportunities to be Drills, Recruiters, Instructors, etc..

We're lucky enough to have missions all over the world, and joint missions with other countries military's are fairly common.

This is a really rough overview, there is obviously a LOT more to it.... I joined the Marine Corps first as a 6531 (Aviation Ordnanceman) where I worked on the Cobra and Huey helicopters. After 4 years I joined the Army as an 89B as the ammo field was the only field I had experience in. I am at 17 1/2 yrs of AFS and will be going to SLC in Jan. As SSG Call said in his comment, you will learn a ton if you can get into a SOF unit. The last 3 yrs I have been the ammo manager for 1st SFG(A) and it has been the best unit of my career. Feel free to reach out to any of us on here. You made a great choice in choosing 89B as your MOS.
