How have you dog owners managed to have a dog and serve at the same time without giving up your dog?

Usually a good friend will "adopt" your dog while you are deployed.

Depending on your situation, family members, community members/neighbors, co-workers, and pet sitting services can provide the opportunity to watch your dog while you're at work or deployed. My friend, for example, a Capt in the AF, brought her dog to work yesterday instead of leaving him at home (we work a 9/80 schedule). There are a number of ways to work out dog-sitting situations, you just need to talk to your Chain and/or neighborhood or community members and see what options are out there for you at your current post.

My advice... If you are in a deploying service or MOS, think hard about having a pet. It will limit your housing options and increase your housing costs, considerably. Instead volunteer at the local pet shelter. Dealing with so many pets and getting the adoption ready, you will be a pet genius when the time comes for a permanent pet.

Unless you are married and she is on post housing or off post housing- say good bye to your dog.
