Been a couch potato and can’t pass APFT. Reserves will probably chapter him out. Can he go to a recruiter and still join RA? If so, how hard is it to get a waiver? But if he is in that bad of shape not sure a recruiter will touch him. He needs to get back in shape where he can pass the APFT, and then go to a recruiter. If he refuses to get off the couch and work his tail off, no military career. If someone is not able to put forth the min. effort then why should the military put forth an extra effort? They're kicking out people who are nondelpoyable for 12 consecutive months.

If he wants to be active duty he better get back into shape before talking to a recruiter. I would be surprised if there are waivers for APFT failure in the Reserve to go AD. If he's about to get chaptered...I doubt it.
