It creates the popular conception of hell despite there being no physical description in the Bible if I recall correctly.

I think that Dante's tale needs to be updated with another circle of Hell, one reserved for politicians.

Dante's Inferno was not only a description of Hell as he saw it, but a moral guide to proper behavior and character.

If you were to update Dante's Inferno today, the only thing that would change would be the circles of hell and those in them. Dante based the circles of hell and those in them based on what he perceived to be the worst crimes. For example, he thought that corrupt popes deserved to be in the lowest pits of hell, so today you might replace the pope with a corrupt president.
