Cant say that ever happened to me, nor have I ever seen it in my time. However I will say the feel did hit when there was only 2 hours remaining on a 24 hour shift, just to have the shift end and all of sudden because it was a day off I felt awake afterwards. We had two man watches, and a rack. 1 up, 1 down, unless there was a reason for both of us to be up, have the other guy sleeping. It's just not feasible (as opposed to possible) to "stay alert" for 24 hours straight. So swap off for 4 hours in the dead of night. It was the "Flaming on the Rhine" tour. I didn't realize I wouldn't get back to the dock until 0430 and my shift began at 0600. Needless to say my 24hr shift was one to remember, but somehow I don't remember too much of it.
