Cant say that ever happened to me, nor have I ever seen it in my time. We had two man watches, and a rack. 1 up, 1 down, unless there was a reason for both of us to be up, have the other guy sleeping. It's just not feasible (as opposed to possible) to "stay alert" for 24 hours straight. It was the "Flaming on the Rhine" tour. I didn't realize I wouldn't get back to the dock until 0430 and my shift began at 0600.
