I would like to be at least notified before my responses to post on rally point are published elsewhere, but more than that i would not like my post or responses posted elsewhere especially if i do not know that will happen before i post it.

My "first look" for LTC is on the cusp of retirement. I honestly don't think I'll make that cut with the way things are going. It frees my up to be less political in my online conversations.

CPT Private RallyPoint Member Since I'm retired I don't really care, but I don't think what an active duty service member posts or comments on in a discussion should have any reflection on his/her ability to get promoted. I haven't seen any really bad comments and posts made by service members. In most cases they have been very professional. Using RP website as a gauge for the promotion of an individual means the leadership has too much time on its hands to be surfing around looking for excuses to not promote an individual. There are promotion points systems in place and the systems vary among the different services. Promotions should be based on first hand knowledge of the service members performance in garrison and in combat, their evaluations, awards, first-line supervisors recommendations on day-to-day performance in the line of duty, and their accomplishments since the last promotion. Not something they commented on during an RP discussion. We have some really great service members that will do some stupid things online in Facebook, RP, LinkedIn, and other forms of social media, because they are human or they just aren't thinking. They should take into account that future employers are now looking at those sites as well. I just don't agree with it as a means for not promoting an individual, unless it makes the 5:00 O'Clock news, and I personally would never use it to base my recommendations on a potential promotion. That is just my opinion, but hopefully some of the younger service members will listen to the warning about future civilian employers and what they post on social media. Since it is being looked at today more than ever - then they just need to use good commomn sense before posting it. Theres a regualtion on it for the Army, so I'm sure there is one for all the other services. I was little long winded today, my apologies!

No worries for me - I'm retired. That said, note that what you say here may be re-interpreted by others in a way you may not have meant. From another point of view, this is as much in the public domain as Military Times.

This is a social media site. With it goes all the positive and negative aspects of that. I would say that if you feel bothered by the potential for your views and advice to affect your career, you should steer away from public social media or institute strict privacy settings.

There is nothing that I say here that I would not say in front of the 4-Star. The things that I say on here and the manner in which I say them, that I have said similarly throughout my career, consequently getting me here. And I will continue until I have a little "R" after my rank/name. But no time soon! :)

If you wouldn't sign your name to it in a newspaper, why would you post it online? Especially given that print media is dying in favor of the interest, and that nothing on the internet ever goes away.

Think before you speak, think harder before you write (regardless of where you write).

It may affect your military career similar to how a Facebook account can affect someone's job.
