How do you feel about Veterans only communities?

I don't mean just disabled Veterans either. But any Veteran who wanted to apply to live in such a community. I heard about a Veterans only community in California but can't remember the name of it.

Feel? Indifferent I suppose,,, if the free market support a vet focused community, sure you bet. No different then a community that focus on golfers, retirees, ect

I'd presume the "for the purposes of this community, a Veteran is defined as blah blah blah" applies. If you're going for a healthy culture, you probably don't want the tossed after 3 months meth head veteran. Gets interesting when you have to draw a line somewhere. People below it see there's something they can't have and then take you to court to get it. Lifestyle communities tend to be more expensive. So if you don't golf, have your own airplane, etc. you don't tend to buy there. Age driven communities like the 55 and over stuff works because the developers have unrestricted similar housing next door or there's plenty of other similar stuff nearby.

It's interesting in that with the declining membership of VFW and AL, I'd figure the desire would not be universal. For me, I'd go for a resounding no. I avoided living on base my whole career. That has to do more with keeping the MIL stuff in one compartment and living life in another.

Don't really like any "only" communities. In my experience they impose restrictions that aren't necessarily conductive to normal living. No experience with vet only communities, but lots with 55+ communities. They generally restrict time or other limits on when such things as kids visiting are allowed or how often you can do such things as hold parties. Agree with, or least can review, policies of homeowners associations before buying and would not want to be in a community that restricts the way I want to live.

Ohio has a number of veteran homes for vets on restricted income who could be potentially homeless.
These seem to work well.

I might consider trying to live in one. Maybe it's a trust issue I don't know, but I'm more comfortable around military members than I am Civilians. Then again I never really liked the public anyway.

I'm curious as to what one would be like, so long as it wasn't like an HOA. Up tight people who can't mind their own business and then you're paying a $500 fine because a friend was staying over and parked in your yard.

There are Veterans only housing areas popping up all over. I know of an apartment complex for Veterans in Indianapolis, a friend lives there.

My wife loved living in military housing because of the close relations we built and the mutual support that just don't exist in civilian neighborhoods. If that type of support exists, then a vets neighborhood could be nice

On the surface it looks attractive. Also consider that we have a hard enough time trying to reintegrate into a society that for the most part doesn't understand us. If we segregate ourselves more, then I think we will end up hurting ourselves more than helping.

While I do like the idea out right not all veterans are good people and we are already pretty good and keeping with our own kind and not really looking into integrating. I think its important to reconnect and become part of our communities and spread the military values and conduct that we were taught because I feel is seriously lacking in society.

I've only seen this is reference to retirement communities. I don't know that I like "retirement" communities on principle - though I might change my mind when/if I reach the stage where I am physically limited? My "objection" is that I think that a monoculture of any type is bad. New/different stimuli keep the brain working.

My specific concern with a veterans only community would be a fear that everyone would want to swap war stories/relive the glory days. I prefer the present and the future. Of course, that may not be a real concern, I haven't visited one of these communities and only know them from the adds in veteran-focused magazines.
