Not a fan. K get the concept and do agree with it. However; shoving it down Guard & Reserve throats so quickly is hurting some nco's, myself includex

3:Educate
4:Promote

Will make room for some of the ones with a higher sequence number (ill be on the list this year, my first look). I think its a great way to pull the dead weed from the garden. If i happen to be there, then so be it and ill do what I have to do to comply with the system. Were NCOs and wer aughtto be masters of adapting. If you cant adapt to this, then might want to look at yoirself cause the weeder is about to get ya. Were not going to change it, so why fight it. Im not going to roll over like a dog, but im going to pull ot forward and use it to my advantage where i can.

Only issue, it feels like those that join the military straight out of high school are now behind the curve, rather than ahead of those who wait a few years. You used to be ahead of your peers that joined later in life, but now going to college for four years before enlisting is the quickest way to get promoted.

STEP seems fair and practical. The Army might have to fix their school system so it can be fair getting qualified troops to their respective NCOES. Lastly, it will hurt the NCOs that are hidding from NCOES.

I like the system, its going to weed out some of those who do not belong/want to be at the next level. I just hope that being ahead of the game by being complete with SSD III &IV help when the board comes around.

It seems like a force reduction tool, following the whole "up or out" concept; if they make it more difficult for you to get promoted then you'll leave the service. It's slowing promotion rates down, and right now we are getting the short end of the stick because there wasn't time to meet the new requirements prior to implementation. It will even out in a few years, but the promotion rates will probably stay slower. I'm personally unhappy because I was 4 days short of the SSR for ALC, and they wouldn't let me extend. Somehow, they think it makes sense for an NCO to reenlist for 2 years for NCOES. If I got picked up, I probably would have reenlisted or extended, but after being treated like shit for so long I'm through.

Promote
Aspect of the system. I think I read a fellow NCO say you use to have the upper hand by joining right out of high school, now you need college. Even though this sounds grand from a professional stand point . As a Private I would rather my leader have 4 years of combat experience then a leader with just 4 years of college. Our experience is what makes us competent as leaders.

SSG Private RallyPoint Member From what I've read, it seems like a good system; what I am wondering is, is the Army going to be able to clear all those waiting lists for NCOES anytime soon so all those NCO's that want to get promoted can? And that new NCO course for MSG's, my guess is that will be another logjam with everyone and their mother trying to go in order to get promoted.

As a Soldier on the PPRL I kinda don't like it because we are a generation that wants what we want right now, but practically thinking it makes sense. Why promote Soldiers then send them to an NCOES that they can't pass? Why hold dead weight? Show me that you are capable of moving up, do your part and get promoted. It shouldn't just fall in your lap.

It seems pretty fair to me. I think that forcing people to attend a required NCOES is good since I know a lot of people who try not to attend. I just hope that the wait for NCOES goes down since it will be required for promotion now.

I'm pretty ambivalent about it. On one hand it sort of stinks we no longer get points for deployments, although I understand the reasoning; on the other hand, we get more credit for weapon quals, pt, and higher education. It seems balanced to me, and the premise of the whole is a logical one. Over all... *shrug* I learned a couple of pretty difficult lessons in flexibility and resiliency; I can wait patiently while this change works out the kinks.
