How do you attain a DD214 for a burial, ASAP?

I have a friend who's father died and the funeral home is requesting a DD214 ASAP for burial which is tomorrow. He is being buried in Fairfield, North Carolina. It would be nice to see the Veteran buried with Military Honors. What should I tell him? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also see if that county has a Veterans Service Officer.

Others have weighed in already with good answers, my friend SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. To be honest, I am at a loss to understand how a military service veteran who was discharged does not have a DD 214 or earlier equivalent.
Since funeral homes are by law responsible for contacting the Federal Government Social Security Administration to notify them of the death, I would expect the Funeral Home would know who to contact to verify the military service.
In any event military honors are provided by military units. The nearest active duty military base seems to be Fort Bragg which is about an hour away from Fairfield, North Carolina which is close to Nags Head.

Contact Casualty assistance, we used to be able to get DD214s pretty quickly when I was working there on the VA work study program. Here's the number for Fort Leonard Wood, they can get you in touch with one nearer to you. [login to see] / 0138. Hope this helps.

Did he receive any veterans benefits from the VA? If so they will have one on file because it is required to be there before they can give any assistance.
