I rose from copywriter to creative directory to agency partner, before I went on to another career. (But that's another story...) My least favorite task was designing a logo or logotype (a company name stylized and used as a logo). There are no rules. Either the client likes it or they don't. Don't bother asking why. Anything they respond with is a lie. They don't know. If you are the client, you'll be lying to yourself. The best advice I can offer is to establish a criteria before you look at the first design. What do you want people to "get" from the logo or logotype in 10 words or less? Then show the candidates to various people and ask them what they "get" from them? You'll still probably choose the one you like best regardless of what they say. Why do you like it? Don't even bother attempting to answer that question... About 2000 fonts. Of course a pro will always (almost) do a better job than a free site, but it's a great rough draft.
