I have to admit, had I been in that situation, I think I would have displayed/discharged my weapon before physical contact with the individual right after shutting down the emergency fuel shut-off valve... But? It's much easier saying what I would have done while sitting here at my keyboard! LOL! I'm glad the Officer survived and he is still serving with honor on the Police Force.

Serve and protect were no doubt the motto that Miami-Dade Police officer Mario Gutierrez lived by Sgt Kelli Mays. He quickly assessed the situation and recognized that the perp was trying to blow up a gas station very close to Miami International Airport. He knew that he was the last line of defense and acted accordingly. In desperate times, men and women will rise to the occasion and do their utmost to bring victory from impending defeat.
I am glad to know that a few months after the incident, Gutierrez was hailed a hero and given honorary coins and plaques and a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue T-shirt and hat during a honorary ceremony at the Miami International Airport.

Sgt Kelli Mays We had a Sailor on a chemical tanker that I was on go nuts and try to stuff burning rags into the loading manifold. We used a 2.5" fire hose (that's a LOT of pressure) to blow him away from it, restrained him (a bunch of us basically piled on), and called the Coast Guard, who came and got him.
