Nowadays, children are not required to think. They are encouraged to let the computer do the work. They are not required to learn cursive writing, the foundation for your signature, to validate documents. During the years after plantation slavery of Negros, being able to sign the given name was like gold to those who had been forbidden to learn to read or write. And speaking of slavery, as it relates to history, not only it, but other important aspects of our government have been deemed unnecessary education. In light of these 21st century changes, that seem to me, that are moving the country back to the dark ages, where is the leadership coming from? I'll tell you where; the leadership will be those who legislated the ignorance upon the new generations. Come forth a nation of "haves" and "have nots". Hence, the rise of the New World Caste System. Education has been cheapened with so many 4 year degrees that lack value to employers that I anticipate that the pendulum will swing back to where college degrees are no longer required for employment in many positions.<br />Student's need cursive as much as they need Sanskrit.<br />America is still the most upwardly mobile society on the planet and even our government education system hasn't ruined that yet.Response by LTC Private RallyPoint Member made Jan 28 at 2020 5:06 AM2020-01-28T05:06:49-05:002020-01-28T05:06:49-05:001SG Private RallyPoint Member5491954<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Not teaching students how to think - or telling them what to think - is a very deliberate decision in my opinion. All one needs to do to tell the difference is walk onto the campus in a non-indoctrination camp college. You talk about signatures and cursive writing for verification and validation...ever heard of two-party authentication, PIV, encryption, smartsig software? Things are changing in the world, and rapidly. Cursive writing might have been important when you were a child, but I barely sign anything with a pen nowadays. I don't write checks, I EFT money through the internet. As far as knowledge about the government goes, what exactly are you talking about? I bet the average high school student today knows way more about government than they did 50 years ago. You are going to have to be more specific about what you are talking aboutResponse by MSgt Michael Smith made Jan 28 at 2020 12:44 PM2020-01-28T12:44:21-05:002020-01-28T12:44:21-05:001SG Steven Imerman5580129<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>I taught for nine years, a special ed classroom for emotionally disturbed teens. These kids were in a residential treatment facility, many had been forcibly removed from their families, many were functionally illiterate. I started every morning by reading a poem aloud. Then we talked about the language, cadences, the possible intents, themes, etc. We would look for hidden meanings. I introduced the ideas of motifs, we talked about genres. Reading aloud and discussing those poems was how I taught a lot of the classic literature reading skills to kids who could not read. Most importantly, it would teach them to look for deeper meanings, and not to take everything at face value. I actually think it was the most important thing I did all day, but other teachers constantly asked why I bothered doing it as it did not directly aim at passing the standardized tests.Response by 1SG Steven Imerman made Feb 20 at 2020 7:46 AM2020-02-20T07:46:19-05:002020-02-20T07:46:19-05:00Lt Col Charlie Brown5580303<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>We are raising a generation of those who are willing to let others think for them.
